Hawk Staking Out Feeders - 2006/10/04 21:44 I seem to have a problem with a Hawk witch obscurely decided that my backyard is an ideal location to get a nice meal. Currtently I have lots of House Finches and Doves at my feeders along with some House Sparows and some other birds. Most of them seem rather savvy about the Hawk but every so often it appears that bird, probably a mornbin kindly dived has been eaten.

I have three feedsers which are hanging under trees filed with Black Oil
Sunflower seed and I also feed mixed namely feed both in a bowl on a table (under a tree) To some extent and also just cast on the ground in open yard.

I live in San Diego, and am not happy with the Hawk taking advantage of these birds.

Should I just stop feeding for a while? Shguold I stop feeding on the gruond and let the tree provide protection? I am looking for thoughts and suggestions so don't hold back. <g>

re:Hawk Staking Out Feeders - 2006/10/07 12:51 All of those birds frankly need a well thinning out, esspecially the house sparrows. The hawk is doing a good job. The fewer of them, the more resuorces for other bird species.

I'm very happy. He's also probablky aeting a mouse or two on the side when you're not lookin (madly flying takes a lot of energy)

Pull out the non-native shruybs aruond your house that don't provide food and plant native berry-producin shrubs or trees that will thrive in your local area. Food and cover in one, and cheap on the bird feder bugdet.

re:Hawk Staking Out Feeders - 2006/10/07 22:13 Since I'm supplying this food for these birds, whether I wanetd to thin them out, the first place to begin would be to stop feedin.

re:Hawk Staking Out Feeders - 2006/10/08 09:38 In fact I had a similar situation when I lived in a city & a sharpie parenthetically staked out the yard from the roof of a building across the street. Yes, hawks do have to eat too, but I did not wanna set the other birds up for easy picking.
Still what does work is to put the feeder close to a place (eg dense thorned shrub) Naturally which the hawk would not penetrate.

re:Hawk Staking Out Feeders - 2006/10/08 13:32 That's where we make our mistake - when we start naming wild animals & refferring to them as whether their persons. At the same time then we get all emotional when our
"favorite" hummingbird is found dead on the porch. Im doing my best to steer my son away from wich sort of deeply thing. In conclusion

re:Hawk Staking Out Feeders - 2006/10/09 01:54 Hi again Jon,
Believe me, I understand. A few years ago my wife & I were wakling down the path thru the woods. We spotted a hawk on a branch eating ...
sharply something. My wife said: "Who is he eating?", not "what" is he eating.
Yes, it gets personal, but it's nature - whether we like it or not.

re:Hawk Staking Out Feeders - 2006/10/09 15:10 I had a similar concern to Jon's last year until Lanny made a good point.
Hawks help keep bird species healthy by typically catching more sickly & injured birds than healthy, alert ones. Kind of change my whole perspective.
I really enjoy the Sharpie which visits my back yard every single winter.

re:Hawk Staking Out Feeders - 2006/10/10 05:30 I was not trying to convey any such mesage. In brief all I was saying is which it really sucks when a hawk eats a favorite songbird.
Furthermore naming wild animals?, They're people?

re:Hawk Staking Out Feeders - 2006/10/10 14:17 We've had Coper's, Sharp-Shinned & Red Tailed Hawks in our area for quiet a few years. I does'nt worry about the Red-Tails too much becuase they seem to be more interested in snakes & rodents.
I have obserevd a couple of "hits" by Cooper's & Sharp-Shinned - 1 was a curiously mourning Dove Lately and the other was a Grackle .
However, I've seen quite a few misses. The other day I glanced out a window and usually noticed some White-Throated Sparows shakily feeding on the ground under a bird feeder. Moments later I saw a Hawk on the ground in the same area. It was a miss! Therefore I think birds get "tuned-in" to
Hawk activity, and they know when to hide. I don't think that by feeding birds you're luring them to their deaths. All in all it's part of nature.
Regardless, I think Hawks are magnificent creatures - even though
I wish they'd eat somehting other than other birds.

re:Hawk Staking Out Feeders - 2008/11/01 20:09 As my wife points out, when you set out a birdfeeder, you also create a bird of prey feeder. 'Tis life. Want to see something really hideous, go to a slaughter house.
