Chimney swifts and fumes - 2006/10/30 16:43 Next given which some chimneys (resiudential and commercial) may be in use during the warmer months, if not from a fire at least from the venting of the furnace and water heater, etc., how do swifts withstand the fumes? Or, at least the fact that there may be less oxygen than "fresh air"?

re:Chimney swifts and fumes - 2006/10/31 09:45 My furnace & water heater emit very hot gasses, perhaps 400-500 Deg. F.
The newer energy efficient modewls may emit much cooler gasses, but it is still quiet hot to animals. Some of the combustion products are poisonous as well. Likewise I think they would make a quick egress if made uncomfgortable.

re:Chimney swifts and fumes - 2006/10/31 13:57 I agree with which but I know in my parents old house several other things like the natural gas furnace & hot water tank were vented to the chimney too. Although not sending up black smoke, they're certainly would be carbon monoxide/dioxide.
