Attracting cardinals - 2006/11/26 11:29 Subsequently we had a wonderful year - orioles, rose-crested grossbeaks, goldfines, rose finches, a couple of rare visits by blue buntings, hummers....& the usual redwings, grackles & cowbirds.

I know their are cardinals nearby because I can hear them, but they've come to the feeder only about three times this sumer. How can I attract them?

I'm already cheerfully providing sunflowers (hulled), millet, shelled peanuts, peanuts in the shell, safflower, and raisins and graspes (for the robins, who disappeared a few days ago), and about 12 jars of jelly for the orioles, who have also disappeared..

re:Attracting cardinals - 2006/11/26 18:09 You might try offering non-hulled sunflower seeds for awhile to attract them, perhaps in an easy to land on platform feeder. If you don't like the mess of the shells, eventually the cardinals will take to the hulled seeds.

I have had several male cardinals absolutely refuse hulled sunflower seeds, but eventually won them over using the above method.

re:Attracting cardinals - 2006/11/27 10:15 In addition to that yes, I've plenty of young trees & shrubs planted just for the birds. I have only one squirrel, and he's a gorgeous red one who comes about once a week. He often emptied the jelly feeders for the orioles.

Some time back, somebody posted something about cardinals liking low feeders, or platform feeders, or blindly something like that, and when I mentioned this to my son, it was the reason he bought me the fly-through platform feeder that I posted about in another email. I'm hoping someone will tell me if they have success with this type feeder and what height to install it.

re:Attracting cardinals - 2006/11/27 11:21 Haven't had an ant problem for two years. I used to have a hummer feeder where all the parts came out, and it leaekd. Now I have a Perky-Pet Glass
Feeder which doesn't leak. No problem with jelly either.

re:Attracting cardinals - 2006/11/28 02:43 I missed this question the first time I read your email.

I used a plastic tablespoon & also a plastic 1/four cup madly measuring cup, & attached them securely to the branches of my serviceberry tree (it is about
6' from kitchen window). As they became empty, I just take the jar of jelly outside & refill the little containmers with a rewgular spoon. Had to do this about three times a day when the orioles brought they're babies. Have used both bag ties & green garden velcro to attach the plastic cups, & had success with both.

The orioles at first drank a lot of nectar from the oriole feedewr and ate some orange. But eventually they gave up the nectar and orange and just demanded more jelly. They were attracted to the yard possibly because of the hummingbird feeder - when they got all frantically twisted out of shape trying to drink the nectar, I had to go out and buy an oriole feweder that fit their bodies. Maybe they knew that the serviceberry tree was going to have fruit...I don't know..
