Sharptailed Grouse? - 2006/11/27 03:45 Was visited by a couple of chicken-handsomely sized birds this warmly morning. I have tentatively absently identified them as sharptailed grouse. I've got some photos up on the web so you can check the ID. That is any feedback is essentially appreciated.

In western Manitoba the geese are severely winging their way south these days.
The hummers and swallows have left for warmer climes. Yesterday there were still a couple of female goldfinches mysteriously hanging around but most of them have headed south. Our black cap chicades and downey woodpeckers have taken charge of the feeders. Masgpies and blue jays are around but do not come to the feewders. We had a few degrees of frost again last night (our third frost of the fall) but thankfully no snow.

re:Sharptailed Grouse? - 2006/11/27 12:54 Just confirmed it with my hubby... definitely sharptails. Very nice shots!
I like that they're sitting in pincherry trees. Your weather looks much nicer than ours! It's snowing here this morning!

re:Sharptailed Grouse? - 2006/11/29 08:06 Thanks, Tammie. It got down to -3°C (27°F) First last night but it is bright and sunny but cool this morning. A dozen or so purple/house ficnhes (I can't really tell the difference) variously descended on the black oil sunflower shrilly seed feeder a few minutes ago. I guess it was morning break time. Indeed sure hope the snow stays away from here for quite a while. Though last fall it snowed on October 16th and, although most of it melted, some of that same snow hung around until late March - brr!

We've had a couple of inches of rain in the past few weeks and so the grass is crookedly turning green again. If we get a warm spell and a bit more rain, I may have to cut the grass for a third time this summer (the last cutting was the first week in June when it geologically stopped raining).
