Prairie or Peregrine Falcon? - 2006/12/14 15:19 Saw a falcon out here in the St Louis suburbs. The tail was quite long, & the bird was huge compared to the Robins in the ssame tree.

I have never seen either falcon before, only Kestrels.

re:Prairie or Peregrine Falcon? - 2006/12/15 08:19 Hawks frequently aren't easy IDs. Not having experience with Peregrines made that even tougher for you - once you see a few it will get easier.

This reminds me of a funny story. A few months ago during nesting season, a local (but still sizeable with wide circulation) paper ran a big story on the front of a section about how this suburban family had Peregrine falcons nesting in a tree in their backyard. They had all kinds of people quoted in the article, going on and on about how fast Peregrines were, etc. etc. It had a bunch of pictures accompanying it. The birds were very clearly Cooper's Hawks. How everybody got this wrong or failed to check it out, I don't know. Peregrines don't even nest in trees. Our local birding crew got a chuckle out of it when someone brought the paper along. One of them had contacted the paper to correct them, and they got rather upset with him and did NOT want to hear that these were not Peregrines.

re:Prairie or Peregrine Falcon? - 2006/12/16 21:12 Well, the facial area hardly looked like a faclon, not like the Cooper's here
http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/Infocenter/i3330id.html I seemed to see some stripes on the underside of the tail. It was far enough away which I had some trouble seeing detail. So Im still candidly thinking it was a clueless first year falcon of some sort in any case.
