Does anyone recognise this bird? - 2007/02/12 04:32 Hi, I took 6 pictures of a bird that was on my mom's back porch railing and I was hoping that some one here could tell me what kind of bird it is. These where taken in Northern Ohio.

Here are the links to the pictures:

Does anyone recognise this bird? - 2007/02/14 00:25 no problem, I can let you know if I find out.

The problem is though that no one knows what it is. I might have found a new species of bird.

If I find out anything I will let this forum know what my findings are.

Thanks

Appreciate it

Does anyone recognise this bird? - 2007/02/16 18:36 It is really hard to tell from these pictures, but; from the color variations, it may be an Eastern Cow Bird fledgling. Not sure, just a guess. With the short tail, it could be a female Grackle fledgling, although the beak is kind of short for that.

Does anyone recognise this bird? - 2007/02/25 15:45 Yes, it is a fledgling common grackle about 5 weeks old. I am the foster grackle mother in the Florida Keys and I have raised since 2002 approximately 80-100 orphaned baby birds. Here in the Keys babies are found on the ground after palm tree trimming, high winds, parents lost, or tossed out of the nest because of a disease. The mother knows long before we do that her baby is ill and just throughs it out! The disease always kills the baby but until it shows we nurse it.
The baby in the picture is probably on its first flight or two and landed on the porch rail. The parents plus the colony will be nearby watching for predators and will be very vocal if anyone gets too close.

Does anyone recognise this bird? - 2007/02/25 18:50 Although it wasn't me asking, I'm still very happy to know now who mystery bird is, so thank you very much Susie. Hopefully Star will sign in here soon so she will discover the answer as well.

May I compliment you on the wonderful work you do? It's so good to hear people care

I hope to see you here back...

Does anyone recognise this bird? - 2007/02/25 19:04 Thank you Ward9 for letting us know what kind of bird this is. The adult Grackles do not have the mask on the face and I cannot find a grackle baby. Do you have an image you can post here of a baby grackle? I would really like to compare the two.

Thanks

Re:Does anyone recognise this bird? - 2007/03/03 23:29 Hi Ward9, thank you so much for showing me those images. The bird I took pictures of is not a baby grackle. Baby grackles look much bigger than the one I seen, plus there is no mask on their faces.

Thank you so much.. that ended the baby grackle theory.

Re:Does anyone recognise this bird? - 2008/05/22 07:06 Star, the pictures are definitely of a young grackle.. I have rehabilitated quite a few of them. When they are young fledglings they appear to have a mask, because they lack feathers in a certain pattern on their face until they reach a certain age.

They also vary in size depending on their age, and the one you have pictured looks to be about 4-6 weeks old. They grow VERY quickly, and are nearly ready to be on their own within a few months! Hatchings of Common Grackles start out at around or under 2 inches and when full grown stand around a foot tall.

I live in Southeastern Ohio and they are very common here. In fact, just a little bit ago I returned one just about the age and size of the one you have pictured to a nearby tree, since it was sitting in the middle of the road just a few houses down from me!

Not quite old enough to fear humans either, at least until I picked it up. It then proceeded to cuss at me in bird language and bite my fingers lol! So now my cat isn't happy (cats are never truly pleased though!) and he can't figure out why I'm not letting him outside. =]

Re:Does anyone recognise this bird? - 2008/05/27 19:59 Hi sweetsolstice, thank you for your post. I was just thinking the other day that I still have not been able to put a name of a bird with the pic that I have. Since you have alot of them around you do you possibly have a pic of a Grackle with a leathery face like the one in my image? I would be able to put this to rest if I could just see another bird with the leathery face.

Aloha, that bird in your pic is very close to the bird in my pic except for the leathery face and the feathers that stand up on top of it's head.

So much time has passed and it is still driving me crazy.. lol

Thanks to everyone for your help. You all are probably right and it's a grackle. I would just feel better if I could see another one like the one in my pic.
