Bird nesting by my window! Need identification - 2007/06/03 04:18 Hello fellow readers,

There's a little birdie who built a nest by my window at home. Can anyone let me know what bird this is? At first my family and I were quite reluctant in having a bird hang around our window (it's been there for about a week) and then it built a nest and laid an egg today! My mother loves fresh air, and opens the window very often. But with the bird there, we can't open it anymore because we're afraid of scaring it. During the summer, the rain water tend to flood the window area because there's a crevice for the window gate. We wish to help the birdie and it's baby birdie as much as we can, without scaring it. Right now we placed a small cover over the nest so rain water won't fall on it, and detoured any possible water going into the crevice. Thoughts, ideas of the bird type? Any information would be well appreciated it. Thank you!

Description of bird: Sharp beak that curls downward, extremely dark green feathers on it's head and body (almost black), grey/white feathers around the abdomen.

Location: New York City

Bird nesting by my window! Need identification - 2007/06/04 03:17 Hi Rockadee, thank you for responding! I actually went to the public library today and my local museum of natural history to have it confirmed. I think it's great a birdie decided to choose my home to nest. It's a great start to my summer. Thank you again!

Do you have any suggestions in how I should help the birds? I bought a bag of sunflower seeds today, but the bird won't leave the nest so I cannot open the window to place some seeds there. Everytime I approach the window the bird perks up, and today a second bird came but flew away very quickly when my dad wanted to go take a look at them.

Re:Bird nesting by my window! Need identification - 2007/06/16 05:21 Hello! I wanted to show you updates of the dove. It's day 14 today, and our webcam caught lots of action! (Yes we've set up a webcam every single day to watch the dove's progress!). We placed a board to block rain, wind and sunlight. The doves were working together to further build their nest today.

Re:Bird nesting by my window! Need identification - 2007/06/26 03:36 hi, i also have a bird nesting outside my window. it has been hanging around for a few weeks, and more recently began to nest. it's grown quite comfortable with me opening and closing the window. can anyone confirm that this might also be a mourning dove? i've done some searches over the internet and it seems to be the closest in appearance. thanks in advance!

Re:Bird nesting by my window! Need identification - 2007/06/26 06:54 Hi Maggipie, I'm glad you get to experience the lovely experience of having a Mourning Dove by your window! You should expect an egg in a day or two, and then it'll take about 15 days for the egg to hatch, and another 11-15 days for the squab to become fleding. I took some pictures of my squab (day 7) and will be posting them up soon!

Re:Bird nesting by my window! Need identification - 2007/07/03 10:42 Hello! I'm sorry I was unable to properly put up a picture. I've been trying to make it smaller but it's not working at the moment (my lack of computer knowledge!).

I have uploaded videos we have taken, please take the time to enjoy them! Link: http://www.youtube.com/dominenobis
