Identify this bird please - 2008/05/31 02:15 We live in a suburban neighborhood with lots of trees, lawns and woods here in the Hudson Valley north of New York City. A few weeks ago, we noticed a new bird that I can not identify as it appears more like a tropical species. It is small, probably the size of a dove, has a bright yellow head, bright red underbelly, green/dark blue on the sides , a check pattern around the neck, small spot of yellow near the tail which is about two feet long. I have onlty seen it on the ground, and its head "bobs" somewhat like a pigeon when it walks. It approaches fairly close indicating to me that it has been around humans. Could this be a pet that escaped? We have the usual assortment of birds in our area which has a number of farms nearby including peasants and wild turkeys but nothing like this fellow. Can anyone help identify it?

Identify this bird please - 2008/05/31 16:06 Hi Wags, welcome to the forum I hope you will like it here.

Did you see it again afterwards? I ask because it is easier identifying birds when a photo is available. Could it have been a Yellow -crowned Gonolek?

Re:Identify this bird please - 2008/06/04 03:07 Well - mystery solved. First, administrator, thanks for the suggestion but a neighbor took a photo and was able to identify it. It is a Golden Pheasant. I don't have a digital camera ( on my Christmas list!) so I have not been able to photograph him although my neighbors have. It is living nearby and it is seen daily and in fact is quite friendly indicating it was someone's "pet" at one time. this is the male- quite colorful and nothing any pheasant I am familar with here in the northeast. From what I can read it is not native here - came from China- so obviously escaped from someone. Take a look at a photo in Wikipedia and you will see what I mean. It stays on the ground to feed but seems to roost in trees and shrubs. We worry for his safety with cats and hawks in the area. If anyone has any experience or knowledge about this breed of pheasant, pls let me know.

Re:Identify this bird please - 2008/06/04 11:30 Wow! Wags, he is so beautiful. Simply exquisite
I don't really think there is an awful lot you can do against cats and hawks though. Unless you or a neighbor would be willing to lock the bird in a cage (it having been someone's 'pet' before I am not so sure if this isn't a good idea), to have a zoo care for it (am not too sure if he'd feel good in there after having been a 'pet' and tasted 'freedom') or let him be in freedom with all those dangers luring.

Have you thought of anything in these directions?
