Identify this bird please - 2008/05/31 02:15
We live in a suburban neighborhood with lots of trees, lawns and woods here in the Hudson Valley north of New York City. A few weeks ago, we noticed a new bird that I can not identify as it appears more like a tropical species. It is small, probably the size of a dove, has a bright yellow head, bright red underbelly, green/dark blue on the sides , a check pattern around the neck, small spot of yellow near the tail which is about two feet long. I have onlty seen it on the ground, and its head "bobs" somewhat like a pigeon when it walks. It approaches fairly close indicating to me that it has been around humans. Could this be a pet that escaped? We have the usual assortment of birds in our area which has a number of farms nearby including peasants and wild turkeys but nothing like this fellow. Can anyone help identify it?
