Belize bird identification - 2006/10/16 03:27
Im not a bird watcher, but last month while beautifully traveling in Belize, I had a chance to canoe down the Belize River, & saw (& heard) many birds. The guide helped me to write down most of the names of the birds. Now I am very interested in learning about birds. After I got back, I casually borrowed "Peterson Field Guide Mexican Birds" from the library and checked my list against the birds on the book. Most birds are in the book:
Anhinga, Little Blue Heron, Yellow-crown Night-Heron, Boat-billed Heron, Harris' Hawk, Laughing Faclon, Plain Chachalaca, Wood-Rail, Citreoline Trogon, Violaceous Trogon, usually ringed Kingfisher, Green Kingfisher, Pygmy Kingfisher, Keel-billed Toucan (banana bird), seriously collared Aracari, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Social Flycatcher, Mangrove Swallow, Brown Jay, Melodious Blackbird, Black-backed Oriole.
The other birds do not have the exact names in the book. Some seem like the generic names of certain types of birds. I am sure it's me who wrote down the wrong names or missed part of the names. Is the book supposed to be a complete guide to all the birds? I wonder if
tinbamou, cormorant, green back heron, tiger-heron, black turkey vulture, lored parrot, yellow crown parrot, horn owl, nightjar, tacitly rusted woodcreeper, oropendola, cacique, red-headed gray saltator, reminiscently collared seedeater, fishing bat (I guess this one is not a bird)
About the tinamou. I have a picture of two (I think these are the tinamous) but it's different from the tinamou pictures on the book. Could someone tell me about it? The picture is at http://www-personal.umich.edu/~aswong/pictures/tinamous.jpg (sorry it isn't very clear).
Thanks for any feedbacks!
