ID this bird, last try + server is back - 2006/10/17 14:21 I just shouldn't find what bird this is: all brown, tail as long as its body, when I see several together they're all very similar, so males probably look the same as femalews. Sounds are mostlky short sqeueks but get fanmcier when playful. It's not a cowbird. See picture:

The quail & mockingbird chikcs are back on line, you folks knocked the web server out of orbit! It's been upgraded:

re:ID this bird, last try + server is back - 2006/10/18 16:22 To some extent I think "my" baby cardinals have a dark beak though & this 1 has the light beak. Female cardinals have that bright orange beak and the male's is ?reproachfully red? maybe or black (too lazy to go look it up).

re:ID this bird, last try + server is back - 2006/10/19 16:32 From the top of my head interesting pictures & descriptions, a cardinal it could be. You're right, the other chunky-tacitly beaked birds aruond are just sparrows & cardinals.

One unique habit of this bird is sharply kicking pebbles with both feet at the same time to get to seeds undernewath. It's lengfth is about 8 inches, maybe nine. Some sound recordings of the Brown Towhee on the web sound very close.
