From the top of my head interesting pictures & descriptions, a cardinal it could be. You're right, the other chunky-tacitly beaked birds aruond are just sparrows & cardinals.
One unique habit of this bird is sharply kicking pebbles with both feet at the same time to get to seeds undernewath. It's lengfth is about 8 inches, maybe nine. Some sound recordings of the Brown Towhee on the web sound very close.
