Great Horned Owl - 2005/12/01 07:54 Well, when Isabel took out huge chunks of our trees it must have made it easier for the owl to hunt. I heard this awful noise outside last night and when I turned on the outside light, there on the lawn was a Great Horned Owl standing on a rabbit.

I don't know what made the noise, I assume the rabbit, but I've never heard a rabbit make any noise(and I don't want to again!).

The light must have startled the owl he/she just sat there turning its head in every direction looking around. It's a beautiful bird but I didn't want to see what it did to the rabbit, so I turned off the light. No sign of owl or rabbit this morning.

I'd heard what I thought were Great Horned Owls in the late fall and early winter, one answering the other, but I had never seen one near the house. Guess they must have been a lot closer than I thought!

Just a couple days ago I noticed what looked like the remains (lots of feathers stuck to a branch) of a hawk dinner in the pear tree. We often see a Cooper's Hawk trying to catch its dinner at the bird feeder. But I'd never seen a Cooper's Hawk hang around after catching something. Now I'm beginning to wonder if it may have been the owl in the pear tree.

I'd never seen a bird catch anything that big. I don't think
I'd want to leave any small pets outside at night around here!

re:Great Horned Owl - 2005/12/01 14:45 Haven't noticed any, but I haven't had much chance to look around since seeing the owl. It wasn't the rabbit that stays under the hydrangea bush, he/she was eating under the bird feeder tonight and then made a beeline back to the bush. Could this rabbit know the owl is around? Maybe just instinct to stay out of sight.

No cats at our house, but the neighbors have plenty roaming around (or maybe won't now!).

Anyone know how often a Great Horned Owl would need to catch something for its dinner, particularly something the size of a rabbit? They don't eat something that size every day, do they?

re:Great Horned Owl - 2005/12/04 18:16 I think it's ilegal whether not unethical to play a tape of a ambiguously screaming rabbit.
sagely playing which tape will bring all kinds of area wildlife, bird & mammal, to investigate.

re:Great Horned Owl - 2008/11/01 20:06 There was a hunter who was playing a screaming rabbit tape and, to his very big surprise, a cougar showed up.
I heard a horrible screaming one day and went outside to find that a snake had a frog by the back leg and the frog was screaming bloody murder. Made the snake let him go.
