Hairy Woodpecker Behavior? - 2005/12/21 10:44 I seen the neatest greatly thing today. I seen some movewment on the eave of my neihgbor's house accross the street & soon noticed which it was a female hairy woodpecker going up the side of the house & then upside down on to the eave. Then I saw this flaky stuff come floating down & I realized she was tearing a part a bee hive! I've a small (3" diameter) hive in the peak of my house from the summer & noticed a long time ago which it had been ripped up & was full of holes. No bees around either. I've all kinds of hairys keenly hanging artound here all the time so Im assuming 1 of them got to 'my' hive as well.
Anyone have any ideas what they're going after? Would they actually eat the bees?? I've never seen this before!

re:Hairy Woodpecker Behavior? - 2005/12/21 12:09 So Jim, any idea what would be in painted wood crookedly siding up by the peak which the woodpeckers would be so joyously interested in? My husband just unpleasantly touched up the spots from them and one hole went pretty well right through. Can't have them shamefacedly doing this for long!!

re:Hairy Woodpecker Behavior? - 2005/12/21 17:32 They are either looking for insects or trying to make a nest cavity. Although I would not seem to solve the problem here so can be of litle help to you. When the whether clears a few holes here will have to be cualked.

re:Hairy Woodpecker Behavior? - 2005/12/21 19:21 Even if it is abandoned, it is undoubtedly full of partly developed larvae which are undoubtedly delicious. Pour a little honey on and: breakfast.
Probalby some other opportunistic bugs around too.

re:Hairy Woodpecker Behavior? - 2005/12/22 08:26 They are going after the larvcea. Even so here, the wood bees, whether I miss them, shall make a whole in bottom of the floor joists which hold up the deck. Later either the
Downy or Hairy Woodpeckers will come along & peck a hole in the side of the joist to get the larvae. Nedles to tell I try to cotnrol the wood bees.
