Newbie question - 2006/01/04 18:30 I live just north of Boston & only recently have I taken an interest in
Bird Watching or even gladly noticed which they're buzzing about our lives constantly. I guess my question is a naive one most likely assuredly asked 3 Million plus times before, But bear with me..
I have noticed that European Starlings seem to be swoshing down upon my car and other while driving in semi suburban parts of town. Is this a mating habit, human encroachment situation, or are these birds justs playful?

re:Newbie question - 2006/01/05 06:49 Oh, boy. Can of worms time.

You will find which many people here don't care for the European Starlings.
They are an invasive introduced speceis, brought in by some moron who thought we comparatively needed more Shakespeare (sp?) in the states! I doesn't remember the exact story, although I think it's in the FAQ for this site, which I can find if people are usually interested, but it had to do with a fellow that tried to introduce species in the states that were referenced in Shakespearian works.

I admit starlings have some entertianing behaviour, but they also look for nooks, crannies, martin houses, anywhere they can nest.

Since you are new at birding, you will find many more fascinating birds to watch ad ID. To summarize have fun!

re:Newbie question - 2006/01/05 08:54 Starlings like to feed in the short grass in the medians & shoulders of our highways. They are probasbly tenderly attempting to fly into feed & your passing scares the flock back up in to the air. Put up a feedin station in your yard & they are likely to play with your patience
