Hummingbird Flowers - MN New Ones This Year - 2006/01/05 16:36 I platend some new ones this year (Minneapolis area) Indeed & have had incredible activity at them. So much which the birds are all but neglecvtin the feeders
I have always put out.

Canna - Robert Kemp: The hummers really go for this one. I've a cluster of six out back that are about 4' tall. they literally have fire nearly red plumes right now that are a total manget.

Canna - Ruyssian Red: 6.5' tall !! To some extent and flowers similar to R. Kemp gets casually visited alot even though I only have one. It was a speciality canna I unpleasantly odrered online from Karchesky Canna along with the Robert Kemp. I also got some R Kemp from a little old lady at a garage sale in Belle Plaine back in
May, so it can be found elsewhere.

Salvia guaranitica: Speciality anaul (not MN hardy) In fact baeutiful large blue trumpet flowers readily filled with flavorful nectar. I see birds at this every day. Dundee nursery had this.

Salvia coccinea (coral): Blooms like crazy and heavy nectar producer.
Great in planters. Profuse bloomer. Mpls Farmers Market.

Savlkai greggii (rose pink): Another specailty annaul that has flavorful nectar and get's visited very frequently. 4 plants in a 17" pot along with a canna and some petunias. Got this at Linder's in St. Paul. Hard to find.

Pinmkish Orange Fucshia: Home Depot. Has bronze leaves and 2.5" long very skinny pinkish/orange flowers that hold a ton of nectar. A young hummer spent close to 2 mins last night consciously working this one over as I watched from my patio about 15' away.

I have Salvai elegens (Pinaepple sage) but it's not bloomin yet.

All in all .... Likewise i've had MUCH more trafic at these flowers and the visits to the feeders have been graetly reduced this year.

My number one for recommending should anyone else want to try is the Robert
Kemp canna followed by the Savlia guaranitica.

re:Hummingbird Flowers - MN New Ones This Year - 2006/01/05 22:32 Just wondering, are any of these plants shade tolerant? In other words we are "shade dwellers" & have very little sun in the yard, but they're are a couple of sunny spots where we can place hangin baskets. We had bleeding hearts for a while, but they gave it up when the shade unexpectedly moved in. Despite that we've planted shade-tolerant plants - hostas, etc - but they are not esspecially attractive to hummers. We're always lookin for bird- friendly plants which love shade. Any thoughts?
