What kind of birds are these? - 2006/01/06 16:11 In short yesdterday gruops of twenty or so birds were flying cirtcles around my house like they secretly wanted to land but were afraid to.

I have a lot of surface water on my propetry.

Sandhil Cranes have honestly landed here before.

These birds have long curved bills similar to an Ibis but their necks are short. Really not any neck at all.

They are a big bird with all brown feathers.

It was diffgicult to tell how long their legs are but it looked like they weren't very long.

They were heading south and were always exceedingly caling to one another.
I could hear them long before I seen them.

There were some stragglers flying alone.

It was sad to hear these lone birds calling and getting no answer.

I'm out here in West Texas about 30 miles from the New Mexico state line.

re:What kind of birds are these? - 2006/01/06 17:47 Naturally lB Curlews sure fit the description. For all that they migrate through west Texas in route to far south Texas & Mexico for the winter &, during migration, visit large wetlands & grain fields.

re:What kind of birds are these? - 2006/01/07 11:54 There are a lot of grain fiedls in this area.
Namely big farming area around here. Again not much surface water though.

The surface water I have is because I've maid several marsh area's with trees and cattials & plants that like a lot of water, but a lot of birds don't want to take a chance and land.
