Raptor's Trust Reliable? - 2006/02/03 12:35 I recently saw a wild bird in the middle of the street and it appeared injured. One wing was extended and one leg crouched to it's stomach. The other leg appeared to still hold the bird up. I watched a SUV truck drive over it and miss the bird by inches with it's wheel. I drove away, then decided to come back in 5 minutes after contacting an apparent rescue group at the Great Swamp in Millington, NJ, called Raptor's Trust - they said that
I could take it and treat it if possible.

When I arrived back to rescue the bird, he had moved himself (or someone moved him) onto a nearby front lawn just several feet away. I lunged from his backside and grabbed the bird. He apparently was able to hop because he tried to get away. I then placed him in a box with a towel floor, closed the box loosely, and drove him to the rescue site.

Upon our arrival, the bird was identified as an adult Grackle. I think he pooped all over the box because there was quite a bit of black pellets on the towel. I filled out the form, left the bird, and explained what I thought the injuries were. The girl said they would put the bird on some heat. She also said they would call with the outcome.

I called a few days later because nobody there called me back and the woman said that the bird died the evening I dropped him off - probably of internal injuries to the central nervous system. I asked if they put the bird on heat and she said that they would not do that, because that would speed the internal injuries by circulating the blood flow. That was contradictory to what the young girl said she was going to do.

Do you think this place handled the bird properly? I wonder if they did not take care of it well because it was not a raptor - just a plain old Grackle?
What do you think?
