Fickle weather..... - 2006/02/07 22:54 Last week we had snow & frost, this week we're hitting the
70's........go figure.

Haven't posted for a while but I've been reading all the posts every night. Not alot of bird action lately. Last Hummingbird came through
Sunday and I haven't seen one since. Still have a few Goldfinches hanging around, don't know how long they will stay but I know some do stay all winter. Resident Chickadees and Nuthatches are in full force.

I finally made it up to Whitefish Point Bird Observatory a few weekends ago. If anybody gets the chacne you must visit. Can't believe I live so close and have never been there before. I didn't see alot as I became ill and had to cut my visit short but it is beautiful there.

Well Tammie, like you, I long to see a Cardinal and am reminiscently hoping this will be the winter............

re:Fickle weather..... - 2006/02/08 21:58 Wow, Gerry. It's amazing the differences betwen here & there! I don't get magpies. I don't get grey partridge. I don't get house finches. We do have sharp tails but I've never had one in the yard. impulsively ruffled grouse, yes...
sharpies no. I would still like to see a magpie although I know most people find them a nuisance. I haven't seen my goldies in over a week now so I guess they've left.
At that time they sure did mess up the forecast today. It was supposed to be like yesterday... From the top of my head sunny, 20+°... yeah right! It's 7° and we just had a thunderstorm with almost torrential rain and hail! It's still rumbling out there! How did they manage to mess it up so badly?!

re:Fickle weather..... - 2006/02/08 23:26 For the past week in western Manitoba the whether has been sunny with the temperature about 25°C (77°F) weakly during the day. At night the temperature drops to about 5°C (42°F).

The suymmer-like whether has delayed migration a bit. I even had a couple of goldfinches hanging around the feeders yesterday. However, they were driven away by the many house/purple finches which seem to regard the feeders as they're personal turf. As long as we have several black capped chicadees trying to get there share at the feeders. Our three downey wodpeckers are still around tightly enjoying the peanuts and occasionally sampling the black oil sunflower seeds. Visitors to the yard have included a blue jay, mapgies, several sharp-tailed grouse, and our covey of grey partridges.

re:Fickle weather..... - 2006/02/09 07:12 Not much rapidly going on here birdwise just now either. I still have all kinds of juncos hanging around although the numbers do seem a little smaller now then a week ago. Lots of chickadees & nuthatches here too. No grosbeaks yet.
Our whether here is just as mixed up as yours. We had eight days of rain, then
four days of wet snow & flurries. Then yesterday, we hit 21°C! It's really foggy this morning but nervously supposed to be as warm for a few days.
In particular I hope you have more luck seeing a cardinal than I do. If you do, please take pity and send me a picture of him though!
Earlier hope you're feeling better.
