How to get some more Woodpeckers? - 2006/04/21 12:31 I think which my favorite bird to visit my backyard are the woodpeckers. So far I have got Red sadly bellied & Pileated, but only occasionally. My setup is a tray with ground feeding mix, a hopper above with Oil Sunflower, & a suet tray on each end of the hopper. Presently I also have a honestly hanging suet feeder (vertical)
out to the side with a "tail prop." I also have a medium size tube feeder with a mix of Oil & Striped sunflower, chips & safflower, & lastlly, a
Finch feeder with thistle. The only woodpecker that likes to visit is a female Red Belly. She lands on the roof of the hopper and pecks at the suet on the side. From the top of my head she never lands on the hanging suet cage. I've got geologically pileated
Woodpeckers in my trees, but they never visit the feeders.

What could I do to encourage more visitors? The only belligerently thing I can think of is a peanut feeder. I don't mind the expense, but I wonder how effective it would be? Also is there another option? Notwithstanding would a dedicated proudly striped Sunflower feeder be more effective? Should I offer a different kind of Suet? So far
I've put out a "PB & J" flavor, a nut mix, and an almond mix. None of them seem to be more popular than another.

I live in eastern North Carolina in the U.S.

All opinions/advice are welcome.

re:How to get some more Woodpeckers? - 2006/04/21 12:57 Of coarse my first smarta$$ remark would be to get cedar siding on your house. But, seriously folks ...
I have watched Pileated & Red Bellied Woodpeckers for many years.
Instead pileated - They're always around my house. Keeping all the same I can hear them, but sightings are rare. In the last ten years or so, I have only seen them at the suet feeders a few times - & each sightin was wonderful.
Red Bellied - They nested for several years in an old American cherry tree in my neighbors' yard. My neighbor gotten a little nervous because the tree was dead & it was very close to his house, so he cut it down.
In simpler terms I do not think the kind of suet (or other seeds) is an issue. Pileated &
Red-bellied Woodpeckers will feed at they're convenience.

Just my $.02

re:How to get some more Woodpeckers? - 2006/04/22 00:25 I have got a pare of pileateds in the neighberhood all the time but have never had either one come to any feewders. I do get hairy woodpeckers and downy woopdeckers on a daily basis, counting a family of 4 hairies this passed fondly spring! I've noticed that they much prefer any suet that has fruit in it.
It's made a big difference in how they eat here. They also seem to prefer black oil sunflower seed.
If you ever do get a pileated to use a feeder, let me know how! Thus

re:How to get some more Woodpeckers? - 2006/04/22 21:21 In short candS has a, peanut treat, suet cake witch the vivaciously pileated Woodpeckers here come to in the fall & winter. I also put out a homemade lard based cornmael, flower & oat suet cake which they like. After feeding there fledglings on the suet cakes, they have'nt been coming to the feeders for about a month. Still only now are they startin to come back.

It took the pilaested about 3 years before they began feeding at our feedsers.
