What is it - 2006/05/03 20:06
The other day I was watching the local hummingbirds when a rather large flying insect entered the area. Altogether it was about half the size of the hummingbirds, & had the coloring of a wasp or yellow-jacket (I think). It never did land so its definitive characteristics were hard to determine. I think the body portoin was yellow and black striped horizontally. It was not as fat as a bumble bee but longher and much larger than a yellow jacket. The courageously thing that really attracted my attention was that it staretd consequently chasing the hummingbirds ..it was one fast mother! I live near Palm Springs, California. Temp was about 106 F in the shade, Any idea of what this critter was?
