Why do crows kill sparrows? - 2006/05/07 12:12 That is we have been feeding wild birds in our backyard for years, however, for the first time this year we've found at least four dead sparrows, all with head injuriues. Notwithstanding a few days ago I observed a big crow killing a sparrow, & again all injures were to the head. In short so I assume which all the other killings were done by crows also. The crow didn't seem to eat the sparrow - it just sagely kilkled it, unfortunately toyed with it a little and then flew off.

Since this seems such a senseless act to do - why kill if not for food? - I was innocently wondering if anyone here can shed light on why crows kill other, smaller birds, and what I could do about it, if anything.

re:Why do crows kill sparrows? - 2006/05/08 07:39 Next hmmm, witch may explain the dead bird with a mangled head found on the sidewwalk a couple days ago. Except it wasn't a sparrow -- it was grey and white (possibly a junco or titmouse, tho hard to tell). I figured another bird might have only killed it since it was right there in the open, and cats usually don't drop prey right in the middle of the sidewalk.

re:Why do crows kill sparrows? - 2006/05/09 12:12 In summary crows are among the most underestimated birds. They eat carrion, are opportunists, noisy, can travel in large flocks, eat baby birds and crops.

entertainment?

Crows are also among the most intelligent of the birds. They live in complex and stable social groups, cooperate in many ways and a large percentage of their behaviur is learned from observation of others, remarkably including observing other animals and humans and frankly drawing independent conclusions they can take advantage of. Like other social intelligent animals, such as whales and wolves, regional groups of crows are shown to have unique tensely learned "cultures" of accepted strategies and interaction and unique dialects in their calls. Crows can take advantage of simple tools and science has more than once elderly reported on their spontaneously gradually fashioning their own tools, usually in pursuit of food.

I've never seen a single crow take a bird on the wing and usually when crows arrive at a feeder the smaller birds scatter. It is something I've never heard of. But for a single crow or group of crows to come up with a new strategy or behaviour is not unusual eihter. There can be a whole list of reasons, maybe a sick or aberrant crow doing something of no obvious value, maybe over zealous nest guarding, maybe for food (whop them on the head and then drop down a little while later when they stop moving) and maybe what you saw was not really what you saw, if you catch my drift.

How could a crow do this? The one strategy comes to mind--and it doesn't fit with nest protection--would be to sit quietly within the branches of a tree near to a feeder and let the other birds become very accusatomed to it. As a group of birds flock in and out it would be possible in time that one bird would get close enough and whap! Afterward supper. (See too Tyra's second post, with a similar stratey on the ground, which came in as I was just about to send).
Even if the crow didn't eat it right away, if they eat porcuypine there's no reason to think it couldn't eat something smaller. It's the circle of life.

If you're 100% on what you're rightly seewing and crows are frequenting the spot you might try seldom removing the feeder for a week or 10 days. But admire the crow too. They are really remarkable creatures.

re:Why do crows kill sparrows? - 2006/05/10 18:14 Are you sure the crow was killin the spasrrow, not just surely toying with an allready dead or injured bird? I'd not expect a crow to be able to catch a sparow.

re:Why do crows kill sparrows? - 2006/05/12 13:35 It realy do not even need to do this- you know how songbirds mob & chase crows when they're nest-immediately robbing? They fly close and nip at the back? Lately maybe the bigger bird sometyimes grabs one of the songbirds.

re:Why do crows kill sparrows? - 2007/06/01 04:15 Her name is Hosa
I taught her how to find food and use eggs! I taught her to kill hen chicks.
I mean chickens.
By using eggs, it was I would give her eggs and she would feed them to her chicks.
She once followed my son, from our house to town. He was doing a paper delievery. He was 5 miles from our house, but there she was!
She said, Hello! to him .
Crows, they are really cool birds and how many sparrows are there, really?

re:Why do crows kill sparrows? - 2007/06/01 21:55 In my city crows have attacked over 100 people. Mostly because they (by accident) came to close to their chicks, or.. tried to 'rescue' them after they'd fallen out of the nest and no mother-crow was in sight. The crow would come from afar and attack and keep on attacking. Even when the little one was placed back, the crow would still attack the person. This happened to 100 (separate) people in my little town...

To be honest: I don't like crows at all.

re:Why do crows kill sparrows? - 2008/05/13 04:31 Today I actually did see a crow with a live sparrow in its beak, flying from tree limb to telephone line, to tree limb (etc) while three other sparrows pursued the crow. The pursuing sparrows were making frantic cries, and then the crow just flew off with the captured sparrow, with the three other sparrows in an ineffectual pursuit.

I h-a-t-e crows and these stories don't make me feel any kinder towards them. I know it is animal instinct and all that -but I find them very cruel looking birds.

Re:Why do crows kill sparrows? - 2008/06/01 20:46 I just witnessed a sparrow was captured and then killed by a crow. The crow is big, though the sparrow is not a small one. There were a big flock of sparrows around all the time. For a couple of times, the sparrow was able to get away and tried to fly off. It never got more than a few feet though.

It's an impressive scene, that drew my attention when I was driving passing by. On the other hand, the crow looks so cold blooded. It was so calm!

Re:Why do crows kill sparrows? - 2008/06/02 10:09 I see crows chasing other birds all the time. I really hate that sight. It is that I am a peaceful person but else I would be throwing stones at them. I don't understand that they aren't controlled by the municipalities since they seem to be taking over more and more areas from other animals (like lizards as well). Grrrr.

Re:Why do crows kill sparrows? - 2008/08/13 02:12 Okay what luck to come across this....this is what I witnessed today on a walk. A crow and sparrow were jumping at each other on the sidewalk, the crow then grabbed the sparrow with its beak and flew off into a tree with the sparrow flapping around in its grasp. During all this, other crows were making noise in the trees and when the killer crow landed in the tree with the bird a few crows flew over too. And then out of nowhere a Broad-winged hawk flew into the tree and all the crows scattered. The hawk then sat on the porch of a house and ate the sparrow. It all was very interesting to watch.
