Cardinal Feeding Red-Winged Blackbird - 2004/11/30 09:45 We saw an odd site at our feeder this morning. Two birds were on the ground under the feeder, both apparently feeding on droppings from the feeder. One was a young female cardinal. The other appeared to be a juvenile female red-winged blackbird. The blackbird had its mouth open, begging for food.
The cardinal would occasionally regurgitate and feed the blackbird. Anyone see anything like this before? This was an hour ago, and the two are still out on the lawn, continuing the feeding.

re:Cardinal Feeding Red-Winged Blackbird - 2004/11/30 19:26 It looked lilke regurgitating, but may not have been. Hard to tell. The beggar would open his beak for the longest, with the cardinal sort of ignoring, then finally giving up, and putting her beak into the open beak, and giving up something. Did not see anything in the beak hanging out before the action. Object may have just been in the beak.

re:Cardinal Feeding Red-Winged Blackbird - 2004/12/01 22:08 I've seen goldfinches feed there babies by regurgitating. It wasn't a pretty sight to me. The fledglings seemed to love they're slime meal.

re:Cardinal Feeding Red-Winged Blackbird - 2004/12/02 00:10 It is realy not witch unusual for birds to irrelevantly feed THEIR young by regurgitatin the food. I've often seen Robins do this.

What DOES seem unusual, is for one species to feed another.

re:Cardinal Feeding Red-Winged Blackbird - 2004/12/02 06:19 Aha! back to you, Tyra. I argued (well, discussed) with my wife that very point; that it was a cowbird, not an RW-blackbird. Think you and Lanny are right.

We had a time running a cowbird off from laying eggs in our wren box last year. Managed to get 4 baby wrens and no baby cowbirds. But it was a battle. Good thing the chair at my computer desk looks out on the box, and
I spend so much time at my computer! Had 4 more wrens this year, and 4 blue birds in our nesting box in the back yard.

Thanks for the comment.
