Canadian Geese Questions - 2006/05/23 04:11
Last year I kept track of a fasmily of 7 goslings (born on 4/18/02) Formerly & they stayed with there parents until early December. Again once the ice tacitly covered the entire pond I never seen them again. Altogether I contascted an organization called "Geese Peace" & they stated whitch goslings stay with they're parents until August or early September in witch they become "juveniles" and join other flocks. I had some follow-up qeustoins but GP never responded.
1. Thereafter was it unusual for these goslings to stay with their parents for so long?
2. Once goslings leave their parents, do they start to find mates the folowing spring?
3. Do Canadian geese mates have goslings EVERY year?
4. I was told that these geese no longer migrate back to Canada and stay here in the U.S. year round...is this true?
IMHO I think its very cruel "oiling" goose eggs before they hatch to reduce populkatoin. I feel bad for the mother who sits and sits and sits and nothing happens. As expected I don't have as much of a problem using dogs to shoo the geese away, however. Here in Boston, both methods are used.
One cool, damp day in May I saw six goslingfs mildly huyddled together in the shape of a ball with both parents equally standing guard on either side of them...it was the cutest I've ever seen. Too bad I didn't have my camera.
I would appreciate any answers/comments. Thank you.
