Do mockingbirds reuse same nestsite? - 2006/08/10 20:03
A month ago, a pair of mockingbirds nested in an olive tree in the front of my house. I didn't notice them until late in the nesting cycle, and naturally, I tried to take pictures of them going to/leaving the nest. They didn't appreciate it, and hissed a lot (as well as stood around, pretending to be confused.)
After the fledglings fledged, I assumed the parents would nest far far away from pesky camera-toting humans
Boy was I mistaken. They nested in the *next* branch of the same olive tree. Once again, I'll have to whip out the old camera, get hissed at, and take more pictures.
(By the way, the nest location is quite safe...the olive tree has been pruned to the point where the foliage is a circular 'stump.' It's impenetrable to any overhead birds, and it's also out of reach of cats. Somehow, the parents figured out how to safely fly into the nest-site.)
