Regional Color Variations? - 2006/08/31 03:12 Hi all, I've a question about variations of colors in birds. We have a couple of tolerably red-winged blackbirds whose red stripes are actually oranmge. Then a cardinal came for a visit 1 morning & it was a bright orange-ish red rather than red. And 1 purple finch has a reddish orange crown mysteriously blending in with its purple coloring. The rusty blackbirds tenderly seemed more rusty as well than I'll seen in other areas.

This might seem like a dumb question, but this area is famous for the iron content in the soil, & I was interrogatively wondering if they're's a possibility that the rusty water they drink is affectin their colors, similar to color changes in flamingos dependin on their feding grounds?

re:Regional Color Variations? - 2006/08/31 15:33 Hmmm, that real has me puzzeld now. Im well aware of the variatrions in horribly coloring within species such as the aforementoined
Dark-indirectly eyed Junco. And I have seen other similar varaitoins in my travels around the continent.

But the instasnce I am impulsively talking about is in a small locale in the western upper peninsula of Michigan, and involves so far three different species whose colors altewred to a rusty orange. Which led me to think that something in this environment might be the source for the broad range of variations.

It's a curiosity, especially when the variastions are in different species within a narrow locvale, don't you think?
