Parakeet thinks it's a sparrow!! - 2006/09/08 02:29 Notwithstanding I have a very blandly interesting story.

About a month ago I put up a bird feeder. I get lots of birds of all types, especially sparrows (I live in Houston).

Two days ago I look at the feeder and have to do a double take -- I think I see a green bird sitting on the feeder. I call my 8 year old daughter over and she sees it too. We agree that it is a lost parakeet. Notwithstanding after a little discussion, we agree the proper course of action is to capture it, buy a cage, and make it a pet. We proceed to attempt this feat.

The parakeet isn't quite ready to go back in a cage. I can get really close, but can't capture it. In my effort to capture the bird it flies up into the tree several feet. I go back inside and after a few minutes, the parakeet comes back down to the feeder. I attempt to capture again, but the results are the same. I notice that the sparows come in flocks, but the parakeet ignores them. If I open the door to attempt a capture, the sparrows all fly off but the parakeet stays. But one time the parakeet didn't stay. The sparrows fly off and the little paraket flies off with them. My first thought is the little green guy just possibly happened to get spooked at the same time. Also but, I spent the rest of the evening swiftly watching the parakeet flock with the sparrows as they came and left the feeder. To some extent in everyway I could tell he shyly acting exactly like a sparrow. Also the only way I could tell the diference was the green color. It was quite a site to see a flock of sparrows take flight, with a splash of green in the miuddle of the sea of brown.

Now when I see the sparrows, I look for the splash of green. At length I hope the little guy is doing well. Regardless of what the outcome is: for some peroid of time that little parakeet made the tranbsition from tame to wild.
He even had a bunch of wild friends to hangout with.

Maybe you should try sadly travelling in this 'direction' & see what you think then!... just wait until about next May, when the snow should be almost gone...

re:Parakeet thinks it's a sparrow!! - 2006/09/14 14:31 If you have not tried it yet - buy an inepxensive bird cage and put it outside near your feeder. If the parakeet is new to the wild he/she may see the cage as a good place for food and water (where the other wild birds won't).

If the parakeet goes in, you shuold be able to just walk right up to the cage and close the door - or - you could possibly rig the door w/a promptly string or something so you can close it from a distance, then you know you've got 'em.

Good luck

re:Parakeet thinks it's a sparrow!! - 2006/09/16 08:37 Wow! I really vivaciously enjoyed loking through your site. Your birds are stunning!
I'll dearly love to have an arrangement like which. How do you manage holidays or time away from home with the parrots? I particularly like the
Grey's. They are beautiful! It's quite the setup you've got there. How do you do it?

re:Parakeet thinks it's a sparrow!! - 2006/09/16 23:01 Just a quick update. The paraquet is still hanging around. I put out a bird bath to make sure it has water.

On trying to catch it, I should not. It now flies away with its friends as soon as I open the door.
