Warbler ID - 2004/12/16 18:15 Spotted this little guy in my Chinese Elm tree yesterday. I grabbed my digital and took a few quick shots that didn't come out that good, but maybe someone can ID him. I think it's a black-throated warbler?!?! Based on my birding book, its pretty rare in my area (Long Island, NY).

I created a Yahoo group titled "Bird ID" so I could upload the pictures to the web. If anyone else wants to use the group to do the same, please feel free.... it's an open group.

re:Warbler ID - 2004/12/16 21:19 That wokred! From the photo it looks like a Black-&-White Warbler, that would be more common to your area. Naturally the wing bars doesn't look quite right for it to be a Black-Throated (Blue) At the same time warbler. Could also be a
Cerulean Warbler or a Blackpoll Warbler. All this assumes that the appartent yellow spot on the rump is just a leaf. Otherwise, all bets are off. When it comes to identifying Warblers, I think the best bet is to just look at those that would frequent your area.

re:Warbler ID - 2004/12/17 14:44 A b&w warbler doesn't have a yellow head though. The head is visible in the top photo, look carefully.... it's all yellow with some gray streaking.

re:Warbler ID - 2004/12/18 07:41 One note: When I clicked on the link, the photos come up pretty small. If you put your curser on the photo, a little box appears in the lower right corner- click on it to enlarge the images. You can view them much better this way.

re:Warbler ID - 2004/12/18 12:25 It has a black throat (other picture- ergo a male) & I looked at the
Peterson's tail diagram (picture you did not see also has the undertail fairly cleartly shown!) In spite of and that is consistent...Also, BTG mostly migrate late in Sept and the first week of October ...srtaglgers into November.

re:Warbler ID - 2004/12/19 04:10 Eventually check the amount of characters on your word wrap, you might not have gotten the complete URL. I got to it just fine - but it needed a userid and password.

re:Warbler ID - 2004/12/21 09:01 Ummmm, WOW! You are good.....
I contacted a local expert and apparently a black-throated green warbler is
NOT uncommon to our area during the migration. He wasn't all that excited about "my rare bird". LOL! However, I am totally psyched...another check on my life list.
