Urgent question!! Baby Crow found not able to fly... - 2006/10/10 10:23 Hello everyone,

It's my first time here and I have an urgent question. I just saw a young Crow (fully feathered) on the ground and he obviously hasn't learned to fly yet. He's really clumsy and when I found him about 2 hours ago, he was standing on the walkway of a hotel where the crows have their nests and all the adults were screaming and making a lot of noise. I don't know exactly what it meant but it was obviously because of this young bird.

Being that I have a Parrot at home, I am not afraid, so I tried to approach the young bird but he was afraid and would try to fly but would hit a small wall that was by the walkway. He ended up sitting and hiding in a grassy area covered by palm trees and I saw him still sitting there about 1 hour and a half later.

I called the LA Animal control and the woman who answered said it was normal. That the mother pushes the bird out of the nest to encourage him to fly and that he will be ok and that he will eventually muster the courage to do so…He doesn’t seem hurt though.

Basically, I am just hoping for reassurance that it is really the case and that she didn’t just say that to make me feel better. I’m just afraid that he will just sit there and starve to death or something. I will walk by again in a few hours and I’m hoping he won’t still be sitting there.

Thank you to anyone who could shed some light on this.

Catherine

re:Urgent question!! Baby Crow found not able to fly... - 2006/10/12 09:00 Hello,

Thanks for your reply.

I don't know if he's still there because this happened by my office and I don't live nearby. However, when I returned after work that day, he was still sitting in the same spot.

I noticed this time that he looks blind from one eye. Looks like he's had an eye injury but it doesn't look fresh. I wonder if it really is a baby after all.

I left him some food and water but if I see him tomorrow morning and he's still at the same spot, I will call the west LA animal shelter for them to pick him up.

They told me they euthanize wild birds unless they're endangered but at this point, I think it would be the humane thing to do rather that him suffering...

I will let you know what happens tomorrow when I go to work.

Thanks!

re:Urgent question!! Baby Crow found not able to fly... - 2006/10/13 15:36 Looks like he may be ok after all. A gardener on the premises told me that he saw him this morning that he can now fly. He did mention that he has a problem with his eye, which I also noticed later on. He may be blind in one eye...

However, the gardener assured me that he was fine. I'm very happy to hear this.

Thanks!

re:Urgent question!! Baby Crow found not able to fly... - 2006/10/17 02:40 Btw, I saw the gardener again this week and asked about the baby crow- he said they're all flying now and doing well.

I love birds, especially Parrots. I have a Rose Breasted Cockatoo that I view and treat like my child and I also have two Parakeets- they were my first birds.

I like all wild birds though... even Pigeons. My Cockatoo looks a little like them- same body size (with a bigger head) and similar grey colorings on the back and wings. See for yourself- here's Milo.
