Rescued orphaned swallow chick - 2006/10/24 22:23 Hi: I'm new to the forum. Several months ago, we noticed a large flock of cliff swallows enter into our So. California neighborhood (We live in Palmdale). They immediately set about constructing their mud nests, one of which is under the eaves of the roof of our two-story home. Last week, we discovered a chick in our yard, which had fallen out of the nest. From what I can tell, he (or she) was a week old . He had a broken foot, so we couldn't leave him on the ground or place him in a tree without keeping a close eye on him. We waited to see if his parents would find and care for him, but they didn't. Our only solution was to take him inside the home. We gave him water and (you'll never guess) peanut butter.

I honestly had no hope of him surviving. We even had the animal shelter send an officer over, but the man told us that there was nothing they could do for him. He told us if they took him, he would have to be destroyed...and we couldn't do that! The following day, he wouldn't take any food or water, so we placed him outside. He immediately perked up, and we were able to feed him. We then placed him outside our upstairs window sill, but still no visits by his parents all day.

Well, it's now day six. He has grown trememdously since then, and I guess we are his adopted parents. Every time we approach his cage/nest, he chirps and flaps his wings. We still place him outside every day so that he may observe the other swallows. Our hope is that he can learn to fend for himself, so that he can migrate with the other swallows which we think will be in September. As I understand it, these are the same swallows who return to Capistrano every year. Any ideas or similar experiences would be welcomed. I'll try to take some pictures of him as he matures.

WOW!! - 2006/10/25 18:37 That's great. Doesn't that make you proud?

I'm new too, but last year a morning dove crashed in our back yard. Our neighbor, nursed it back to health. We named it "Pidge". It now likes humans. It is the last bird to either walk or fly away when my wife or I approach our feeders. 8)

I failed to mention... - 2006/10/27 21:49 We have two cockatiels and two domesticated white doves. One of the cockatiels and both doves were wayward orphans who somehow found us. They are good company for "Fred". They seem to be telling him "It coulda been a lot worse!" Today, I'm going to start a picture journal of Fred's progression. Thanks for the comments.

Sad ending for "Fred" - 2006/10/30 14:51 During the night, he expired. At the last feeding, he didn't take much food or water, but continued to chirp throughout the evening. The reason for his demise? I can only guess. I would perceive that his foot wasn't really broken, but deformed; Fred didn't fall out of the next, but was expelled. This was nature's way of insuring that only the strong survive. We tried everything we could. I can truly say that that during his short life, Fred was loved.

Well, wouldn't you know - 2006/11/01 19:13 Almost as soon as Fred passed away, two more baby chicks fell into our yard. This time, the colony actively began to feed them, so we kept them outside. One of the chicks was perfectly healthy; the other is lame like Fred. The first has already developed his flight feathers and has taken off; the 2nd has been actively flapping his wings, but is still with us. I have taken pictures of them and the photos will be forthcoming.

Update - 2006/11/07 21:30 The bird's broken leg has prevented him from flying because it sticks straight out to the side. We found a local veterinarian who will treat him at no cost . They will call us when his leg has mended and he is ready to be released back into the wild. It's great to know there are so many people who actually do care about these marvelous creatures. My only concern is that the bird's siblings have already migrated. I hope he can pick up on the trail!

Picture 1 shows the injured swallow in my nephew's left hand. I'll try to attach additional photos of him right before we release him!

Update - 2006/11/11 16:23 We checked with the vet. The bird's leg is on the mend and he is being kept in an aviary with other wild birds. They will let us know when he is ready to be released. Unfortunately, all of the swallows have now migrated elsewhere. :?
