Problem with Parakeets - 2007/02/19 21:18 I just adopted a budgie from my aunt who found the poor little thing in her yard about two years ago. The only interaction they ever had with the little guy has been daily, usually, feeding.

I've done all the research for a proper diet, and I've read that he should be given a circulating variety of toys. But, I don't know which toys would be best for him.

Also, he's utterly afraid of me being anywhere in the cage. I have to at least try to get him socialized and happy, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re:Problem with Parakeets - 2007/02/19 22:06 I don't think i t is necessary to rotate a bunch of toys. My budgie is perfectly happy with just a new one once in a while. Mine isn't completely socialized yet either. I rescued him in July and he was so stunted in growth that I didn't dare re-home him. I have 2 flat round mirrors and a four sided little mirror in his cage and a couple of tiny shredder toys (which he ignores. He prefers his swings and ladders and mirrors.

Make all movements slow and methodical when working around his cage. Talk and whistle to him, in low tones. Sit by his cage for a few minutes off and on, when you are home. This has worked with JaBird. He doesn't mind my working around his cage, but; I haven't gotten to hold him yet - maybe never will. He talks up a storm though, because I talk to him when sitting by his cage. He knows his name, Hello, bye-bye, night-night and a few other things.

Just take everything slowly and no fast movements in and around his cage and he should settle down in a couple of weeks.

Re:Problem with Parakeets - 2007/02/19 22:14 Thank you! That's very promising. This bird -- still nameless -- doesn't mind at all me being next to his cage, since he's been kept in the hub of my aunt's home for so long. I have him next to my work area, and talk to him continuously. I have a habit of whistling, and occasionally he'll sing with me.

Slow movements will be difficult for me, but I'm sure I'll manage. Thank you again!

Re:Problem with Parakeets - 2007/02/20 02:19 I'd be interested to know what name you'll chose for your bird, Sagittae. Would you care to let me know?

Re:Problem with Parakeets - 2007/02/20 14:08 Oh, he has to get used to people walking by, etc. I just meant, move slowly and talk to him while cleaning his cage and feeding him.

Re:Problem with Parakeets - 2007/02/20 20:42 That's the problem I'm having, in fact. Since I have my routine of morning feedings for the zoo that is my home I'm used to moving quickly. In fact, I scared the poo out of the poor little bird yesterday morning with the brevity with which I fed and watered him. But, I was better today.

Of course I'll let you know what I name him, Aloha! I just have to figure out the gender -- blue bit of flesh on the bill for boys, blush for girls, right?
