Large-billed Reed Warbler rediscovered - 2007/03/08 23:28
The news of the rediscovery of Large-billed Reed warbler Acrocephalus orinus was released yesterday by Birdlife International.
This species was previously known only from one specimen captured in northern India 139 years ago. A few feathers were taken for DNA analysis and it was confirmed that it was A. orinus and not the very similar Blyth's Reed Warbler or Blunt-winged Warbler. Genetic variation was enough that it is possible that a viable population still exists.
It is likely to be an extreme vagrant in Thailand however.
Phil Round, the ornithologist who redsicovered the species, has kindlyy alowed me to reproduce his photos of the bird on my website.
