Painting Tropical Birds - 2007/07/16 20:26
This is nothing short of a life-long obsession with me. I only wish I could explain it, but it must be that whole magical synthesis of colour, form, wings and flight, feathers, song and voice, and eggs that brings into reality for me a huge and powerful beauty in tropical birds that nothing else has been able to so touch me as themes in art. I once did an ongoing art show in a fish store in Vancouver on Cambie Street, before it was ripped up by the Canada Line Construction. This place was called the Fish Stop, and it was a place where you bought fish to eat. Now, why I was showing paintings of tropical birds in a fish store is a question I still cannot answer, except that at the time I was poor and desperate. Well, the owner went into receivership and seven of my bird paintings disappeared with him. And I have not been able to find either him or my paintings since that unfortunate incident in 2003. But life goes on, and I have painted much more and much better since, which in a way has given me the full sagtisfaction of having recovered all my losses. Anyway, I remember one day I was visiting the Fish Stop when a couple of patrons came in and looked at my birds. One of them asked "Why don't you paint fish instead." I simply replied, "Because I paint birds." In other news, I did try painting butterflies for a while, but that just didn't cut it. They aren't birds. Incidentally, I would love to talk with anyone in this forum about bee-eaters, which I also love to paint. Not many people, even among bird lovers, seem to be aware of them. They are so sublime. Someone please talk to me about bee-eaters if you have time. Actually if you log onto my website (you'll find my web-address in my profile) and scroll down the bird page you will find a piece that I wrote about my love for bee -eaters, with some of my paintings of bee-eaters. Incidentally, I also want to assure everyone here that I have no intention of using this forum for selling my art. I simply want to share it with all of you. Ta-ta. Aaron
