Yes...that is a good point. I should start with 1 or 2 - I hear finches are happier with at least one other. I want to be respectful of the animals needs and yet still give my students, when they visit me, an educational experience. Part of the experience, of course, is in respecting animals. I have seen some terrible things in China with animals. First of all it is common to see wild squirrels for sale in the pet market. Also, it is common to see larger birds - crows, magpies, etc with a safety pin stuck through their feathers and into their skin attacked to a string, forming a leash so that they cannot fly away. I could go on but it is too sad. As I thought about it last night I do remember having a parakeet when I was about 9 years ago. It was reasonably easy to take care of once I got into the habit of taking care of an animal. I am in that habit anyway with my fish and g'pigs but I do know that a bird will be different.
