Playmate? - 2007/08/04 20:07 A long while ago I posted about adopting my Little Bird from my aunt, and she's flourished. She sings, she mimics the dog -- and video game sounds, which makes me giggle -- and her colors have become very vibrant with the birdbread vitamins.

So, I was wondering what you wise budgie people thought about my getting a playmate for her. I didn't want to just go out and by a little thing before I asked, not knowing how she would respond. The cage is certainly large enough for two parakeets. But, I'm not sure how she'd take to a friend. She still won't let me handle her, and she can be a little nippy with my fiancé, and as far as I know she's never had a roommate before.

What do you guys think?

Playmate? - 2007/08/06 09:03 Sagittae, that's good to hear Do you, perhaps, have photos you can place here?

There is no clear-cut answer to the question about getting another bird to keep the one that's owned already. There are many people who did and it turned out wonderful and there are people that did and they seem to have gotten an aggressive bird that gets into fights with the original bird.

This is for the most part a decision you have to make yourself, because it can turn out both ways....

Personally, I would not have a new bird in a cage with one that is used to be alone in his cage already. But again: this is my personal opinion

Playmate? - 2007/08/06 11:29 I don't have pictures, since the fiancé is lazy and won't find the cord for the digital camera. She's a real looker though, except for an odd growth on her cere. The vet says it looks like scar tissue, I imagine she got it when she was out on the streets as she's a rescue.

I did end up buying another bird. I have two cages, so they're sitting in their separate cages beside each other at the moment. Louis, the new little bird, is pretty tame. If worse comes to worst, they can stay in their own cages for always, but I do hope they learn to like each other.

Playmate? - 2007/08/07 10:21 Oh yes, definitely, this is a good idea. Just hoping they don't start to 'protect' their own cage (territory) but if everything happens under your supervision it should be OK, I gather.

What bird did you buy? (as a matter of fact: what species is the rescued one?)

Playmate? - 2007/08/08 09:00 They're both budgies. Louis is a more traditional type; royal blue tail feathers and vibrant green with black bands on the wings. Little Bird is bright blue on the wings and tail feathers and white and yellow on her head.

So far, they're getting along swimmingly. L.B. sings for Louis in the morning, and they sit next to each other in their cages for the rest of the day. They haven't pecked at each other or shown any obvious signs of aggression. In a week or two I'll try a supervised visit and see if they get along well.

Playmate? - 2007/08/08 09:38 That's good planning, Sagittae. Or else, you could try to see how they react to eachother and if they follow eachother to one cage by letting them fly in the room? Or aren't they tamed enough to fly around?

Playmate? - 2007/08/10 21:08 Louis is going through hand training now, but Little Bird I don't think will ever be tame enough. She'll hop on a perch if I place one in front of her, but if it's just my hand she freaks out. And getting her to hop onto the perch was months of daily work.

Though, L.B. did slide out through the tray slot when I was cleaning her cage yesterday morning and she just hopped over to Louis' cage and hung out with him. I still think it'll have to be a supervised cage visit.

Playmate? - 2007/08/11 09:03 Oh that's sweet. She straight went to Louis

Well, that sounds good to me too. Will you let me know how it went, when you tried this?

Playmate? - 2007/08/16 08:58 They've successfully been caged together, the cuties. It's adorable watching them feed and groom each other. Then they'll get into little arguments where L.B. will yell at Louis and they'll spend the rest of the day on opposite sides of the cage, but they always make up.

L.B. seems a much happier bird for the company. I'm so glad they get along so well.

Playmate? - 2007/08/16 10:12 I'm happy for them as well. It's good to see the little 'experiment' has succeeded (I wish I could see them )
