Black-headed grossbeak return - 2008/05/08 16:43

He's back. Usually they are here in early April. We were afraid they would not be here this year, because the quail also failed to come in April. This has been a strange year.

i am happy they returned. i know of someone in england who was complaining about the 'martins' not returning this year but finally -long after they were expected- they did return...

I ask them......

Really. I have the Smithsonians Birds of Western North America and knowledgable friend at work.

It's still a learning experience. I'm still a newbie. You most likely have a ton there we HERE don't have or know about.....

Re:Black-headed grossbeak return - 2008/05/10 17:08 Well to me you are very knowledgeable already. Compared to me you surely are.

Here is a little (not that little actually ) fellow I caught last Thursday near the fishermen on the boulevard - I thought I caught him at a special moment, but then it turned out he was just dancing as if to keep the onlookers amused

Re:Black-headed grossbeak return - 2008/05/11 15:00 No, I hardly see those. Once in a while - and exactly at that area of the beach. But two days after this shot was taken (meaning yesterday) I went there again and he was up to his old tricks Putting up a real show - pretending to fly away and coming back. I wonder what this behavior is supposed to express?

They are fish eaters I understood, because he sure snuggles up to the fishermen there

Re:Black-headed grossbeak return - 2008/06/18 20:28 Here's a very handy site for identifying birds. It lets you search according to attributes:

http://www.wildbird.com/what-bird.html

I live in the forest in Oregon and this site is a great help in identifying all the different visitors.

Hope you find it useful!

Re:Black-headed grossbeak return - 2008/06/18 21:03 BTW, Robert, your bird cam is great. I work here at the window with my digital SLR sitting beside me, but I'm considering setting up a web cam. So far this morning at my feeders, I've had Steller's Jays, Goldfinches, a pair of Black Headed Grosbeaks, Mexican Chickadees, a Spotted Towhee and about a dozen hummingbirds.

Re:Black-headed grossbeak return - 2008/06/19 03:35 I hear ya. Wyoming winters are hard.

Fall is really very colorful here, though, and the color changes lasts much longer. In Wyoming, it's red and gold one day and bare branches the next. Then the leaves all blow to Nebraska.

No complaints about the scenery here. We're right in the middle of an old cedar forest, and there's a creek about 20 yards from where I'm sitting right now. I'll have to post some pics of the birds when I get a minute. I actually had a chickadee perch on top of my laptop monitor and sing to me for a few seconds while I was working on the patio earlier. Funny little guys, these chickadees.
