Anti Midge cream - Does Avon work ? / What works better ?! - 2005/03/19 05:51 I am reliably informed that almost no midge creams work very well with the possible exception of
"Avon beauty fluid/moisturiser" or something.

Certainly all the others I've tried both all sting and stink!

Anyone got any ideas?
Does Avon work?
If so which of their fluids is best?
And where do you buy it from exactly (I've never seen it in the shops...)

Does anything else work better?

What about Pyrethrum fluid
Shiperton Henethe

PS Sorry about the cross-posting but I suspect this subject is relevant to all groups in the list!

P.S I also gather that some of these gas powered midge killing machines do in fact work and can kill midges by the pound!! But I am going to remote shooting estate just for a week and I dont think it would make a very good investment just for the one week!

re:Anti Midge cream - Does Avon work ? / What works better ?! - 2005/03/20 15:11 Has anyone tried Pyrethrum tincture?

My homeopath gave it to me to scare off cloths moths (I still cant decide how well that one works - not brilliant certainly)

But moths being insects too, surely worth a try.

OK, I'll try Avon Forest Fresh or Skin so Soft but it clearly depends on my body chemistry.

I wonder if diet makes much difference.
e.g. Eating garlic.

Good for scaring off female humans if nothing else... !

re:Anti Midge cream - Does Avon work ? / What works better ?! - 2005/03/23 13:19 Neem sounds like promising stuff.
Though I dont believe any of these work all that well otherwise we would have heard of them!!

Thanks. I'll investigate Eureka.

re:Anti Midge cream - Does Avon work ? / What works better ?! - 2005/03/26 06:51 I'm surprised at the amount of discussion that Avon's Skin So Soft has generated in rec.birds but I feel I must add my personal "scientific" experience to the mix. I helped coach my daughter's girls softball team from 4th thru 8th grade (5 years) and practice would be a couple of days a week after school during the spring months here in
Charleston SC. Trust me, this is an excellent testing ground for gnat repellents. We used Avon SOS exclusivley. We watered it down (50 -
50, I think) and I can assure you it worked. In the interest of science I would admit to the possibility that it was psychosomatic (we didn't feel the bites?) or metaphysical (we transcended the need to be bitten?) or something else I haven't thought of but the difference between 15 girls and two coaches acting like spastic mimes out on a grassy field and an organized concentrated softball practice cannot be denied. When you're out in a field jerking and slapping this way and that, "studies" that have been done on the effectiveness of SOS are moot. You try it and it either works or it doesn't. We wouldn't have continued to use it for 5 years if it didn't work for us. I hate the smell of the stuff (I don't much like any perfumey type smell) and I still used it.
Now I don't claim to have experience with "midges" which may or may not be "gnats" and I've never been to Scotland but I can report with some authority on good old South Carolina gnats. It's possible I may write this up and submit it to the scientific journal "Nature" but until then you'll have to be satisfied with this report.

If you wish to send funding for future studies contact me via email.

re:Anti Midge cream - Does Avon work ? / What works better ?! - 2005/03/31 14:38 I guess I was being a little cavalier...
And perhaps I'll be a bit more careful.

I may be wrong, but I do find it hard to believe that it would do much long-term damage. Maybe I'll just put it on my cloths to start with, (if I have to).

Do you know for a *fact* that Pyrethrum wont deter the
Highland midge? I reckon it's an experiment worth running.

As for bog-murtle, mentioned by someone in this thread
I do rather like it's smell, (a bit like lavender -
I wonder if that essential oil help?!). I've never see bog-murtle as an essential oil. Anyone know you can get it? (I've tried crush the leave manually and it may help a little - but not enough!!)

Citronella does smell very strongly and I hate the stuff...

Anyhow thanks for your warnings.

re:Anti Midge cream - Does Avon work ? / What works better ?! - 2005/04/04 20:32 Down here in Charleston we have what we call no=see-ums. (basically gnats) I'm not sure if that's the same as midges but one thing that works well on them is Avon "Skin So Soft". SOS is a bath additive and is probably not meant to be applied directly to the skin but many folks down here do with no obvious ill effects. I've used it diluted
50-50 with water. Smells pretty strong though and it might alert any wildlife to your presence way ahead of time.
I often go kayaking on barrier islands and I have a no-se-um bug jacket which looks ridiculous but works well. Campmor sells them, I think.
