re:Anti Midge cream - Does Avon work ? / What works better ?! - 2005/03/26 06:51
I'm surprised at the amount of discussion that Avon's Skin So Soft has generated in rec.birds but I feel I must add my personal "scientific" experience to the mix. I helped coach my daughter's girls softball team from 4th thru 8th grade (5 years) and practice would be a couple of days a week after school during the spring months here in Charleston SC. Trust me, this is an excellent testing ground for gnat repellents. We used Avon SOS exclusivley. We watered it down (50 - 50, I think) and I can assure you it worked. In the interest of science I would admit to the possibility that it was psychosomatic (we didn't feel the bites?) or metaphysical (we transcended the need to be bitten?) or something else I haven't thought of but the difference between 15 girls and two coaches acting like spastic mimes out on a grassy field and an organized concentrated softball practice cannot be denied. When you're out in a field jerking and slapping this way and that, "studies" that have been done on the effectiveness of SOS are moot. You try it and it either works or it doesn't. We wouldn't have continued to use it for 5 years if it didn't work for us. I hate the smell of the stuff (I don't much like any perfumey type smell) and I still used it. Now I don't claim to have experience with "midges" which may or may not be "gnats" and I've never been to Scotland but I can report with some authority on good old South Carolina gnats. It's possible I may write this up and submit it to the scientific journal "Nature" but until then you'll have to be satisfied with this report.
If you wish to send funding for future studies contact me via email.
