Spring - 2009/02/22 14:24 when did spring actually set in in NE Ohio? Much later than the official date (21 March)?

Spring - 2009/02/22 15:37 Much later. Trees and flowers did not bloom until May. We did not plant gardens until the end of May. Did not wear shorts until mid to late June. That lasted until early September when the cold returned.

What's your's like?

Spring - 2009/02/23 14:11 Wow, May!! That's when summer officially should almost start (June 21). And so short!

Here we have heatwaves even in winter sometimes (although not that often of course) but this winter for example was horrible. It felt more like fall was going on until just yesterday when suddenly heavy rains began to fall (until midday this day). Usually (in the past) spring would start half March with occasional cooler days and rain until end April.

Spring - 2009/02/24 01:16 Is that all the rain you get?

Here, we need 14.8 inches per year (Oct - Mar). So far this year 8. A few showers here and there, but no big amounts.

Maybe time to re-do the yard with cactus.....

Spring - 2009/02/28 11:24 Yes, but when rain falls here it really is gushing. That was the case yesterday and this morning. It just looks like the skies are opening up and all the water pours down.

Sorry to hear about the bad rain amounts in your area as well. I really feel so sorry for the vegetation

Spring - 2009/03/01 18:51 No, unfortunately I don't have a yard. There's a kind of a garden belonging to all neighbors (I think. I am new here..)

What do you plant?

Spring - 2009/03/01 23:09 We plant drought tolerant things. Flowers like agapantha and astor. Bulbs 0nly in the winter (when it's supposed to rain). Trees like redwoods, sycamores and palms. This drought keeps up and it will be sagebrush and yuccas and cactus.....

What does everyone there plant?

Spring - 2009/03/02 16:19 Well, I shamefully have to admit that I have no idea I'm situated in a (very) urban environment but next time I get out to the more rural areas (villages mostly, because cities here are just like concrete Lego) I will for sure pay attention.

In the gardens here in town what I see most are bushes of bougainvillea, hibiscus and palmtrees (plus those trees the FrangiPani grows on but of which I don't know their names )

We have ONE rare tree in the middle of downtown. It's called a Kigelia. Absolutely stunning. There are only 3 of those trees in the whole of Israel (two others in other towns). If this wouldn't be a bird forum I would place a photo of it. I pass it many times and each time I just have to stand still at it and absorb it's mystical beauty.

Spring - 2009/03/03 01:16 Wow. That's pretty good. Sort of like what we have here. I think we're both considered to be a Mediteranian climate - sort of. With no irrigation, were sand and sagebrush. I looked up the FrangiPani tree. very beautiful.

All the plants and trees we have here are totlally different than what we had in Ohio. Still much to learn. We're just on the edge of major metropolitan areas (totally concrete), so we have a few more vegitation -

As for a picture, wait until a bird lands.....

Spring - 2009/03/03 15:36 As a matter of fact................. Graceful Prinias came to suck the juices of the (beautiful) flowers a lot (in the summer when the tree had -huge- flowers) and I have a photo of it somewhere. I need some time to dig it up... but then I will place it here.

Re:Spring - 2009/03/06 14:10 Hahahaha yeah - they the pizza boy regularly

I found something about them on an Israeli birding website (in Hebrew so it won't say a thing to you if you don't read Hebrew, but there are some nice photos of this gorgeous creature there as well so you might want to have a look:
click here please ) and it says that indeed they eat insects like moths and spiders etc. Also -and I found this rather sad to learn- generally they live only for a year and a half They can mostly be found in North-east Africa - from Turkey till Iraq...

And in Hebrew they are called............ Pashush
