Loon fishing - 2009/09/08 16:01
September 6, 09 I'm responding to your observations about loons. I just came back for Moosehead Lake in Maine where a friend and I saw nine loons paddling abreast across Beaver Cove. They were too far away to observe closely but we watched though a spotting scope. They started to "scope" looking for fish as they do individually. Then all the loons dove together and emerged at about the same time. They repeated this behavior several times (5 or 6). It occurred to me that they might be fishing in packs on this very large lake. Perhaps schooling or herding fish as a group? Do you know of any indication that loons engage in such behaviors? Of course can't know what was going on beneath the surface of the lake but this was such a deliberate transverse of the lake in a very large group that I couldn't help but think they were traveling deliberately to a fishing spot. After a bit they moved down the bay as a group but I did not see any other "coordinated" behavior. Eventually they flew off, one after the other, and we could no longer observe them. Curious what you think. Bill C
