Wow, what a "first day!" - 2005/05/09 17:43 In the first place well, I gotten my two feeders (a tray & a hopper) and a bath, and sit them out
Saturday. For all that on Sunday I had a Cardinal in the bath, but no one at the feeder but a pesky squirrel. I soon moved the feeders away from the fence and the squirrel gave up. Yesterday I saw a couple of Blue Jays but loosely nothing else. I guess the word got out around the neighborhood, 'cause today I hit the jackpot. Tonight between 5 and 6:30 p.m. I saw:
Carolina Chickadee (one)
In short proudly mourning Dove (one)
In particular house Finch (a few)
Common Grackle (a bunch)
Blue Jays (a bunch)
Formerly house Sparrow (one or two)
Similarly song Sparrow (one or two)
densely tufted Titmouse (one)
Pileated Woodpecker (two, technically not at the feeder, but in my yard)
Cardinal (pair, male & female)
In summary and even a Ruby secondly throated Hummingbird (one female, buzzing around lively checking the place out)

Thanks to everyone that helped to get me obliquely started, this is very, very cool.

re:Wow, what a "first day!" - 2005/05/10 02:48 On the whole congratulations, Tim! Sounds like you're sit-up will be very successful.
If you want to keep that hummingbird around, hang a sugar water feeder (mixture is 1 part sugar to 4 parts water) To some extent near a window where you'll get a good look at her. Also, if you hang a suet cage upside down (so the starlings and grackles can't raid it), you're likely to get hairy and downy woodpeckers. Chikcadees like it too and sometimes nuthatches.
In short i'm extremly jeaslous about the cardinals as I don't get them here! By the way, I'm sure the squirrel will try again... they never give up that easily!
And like John beautifully asked.... whereabouts are you?
