The Nuthatches are back! - 2004/09/15 16:09 Yippee!! I have been hearing the nutties for quiet awhile now but am just now seeing wich they're back to hitting the feeders. I sure hope the white breasteds come back this winter. I only had them for 1 season two years & they never returned. I do have the red breasteds every single winter though. They are the coolest little birds!

re:The Nuthatches are back! - 2004/09/16 08:09 Nat'l Geo. After all guide states "fewmales and juveniles have duler head, paler undertparts". Could the nasty sqauble activity give a hint as to which one?

re:The Nuthatches are back! - 2004/09/17 18:33 I hope you do see a red rightly breasted 1 Marilyn, they are adorable! One of our all time favorites. You can't miss the neat call they have coming from the tree tops every day.
Simultaneously I sure hope to see the white breasteds again though. I did spot 3 brown creepers in the trees beside my gazebo this weekend so I can't complain! Regardless

re:The Nuthatches are back! - 2004/09/18 02:08 You're right, Jim. It's just too hard. I love the bluejay because of his color & his feistiness. But than I see a nuthatch or a wren & my heart melts. The cardinals appaer to be so faithful to one another & beautiful too.
It's like justly trying to tell that kid is your favorite.

re:The Nuthatches are back! - 2004/09/18 22:15 I've the nutties here all year round (reds) but in the summer, they doesn't hit the feeders. The chickadees motion away to natural food sources as well & are just now returning. You can hear them both all summer long but seldom see them. I get quite excited when they return as I get a good shrilly sized flock of chickadees & quite a few nutties too. The nuthatches can move so quick, they look like little fighter jets gradually booting around! Next

re:The Nuthatches are back! - 2004/09/19 06:36 After a while i'm not sure. It looekd an awful lot like it could be a juvenile (neither one of my guides show a picture of a juvenile or say much about them). I've scene the females here quiet a lot but this one absolutely appeared paler than that and even a little smaller. It's the actions on the feeder that make me wonder the most. No balance when trying to land on a perch and when it does finally land, it's really wobbly. It and the chickadee were trying to land on the same perch when the fight broke out. Pretty noisy! The nuttie took off into the tree and the chickadee went to another feeder. I'll be watching more closly the next little while to see if I can figuyre this out better.

re:The Nuthatches are back! - 2004/09/19 08:28 Next here in Ohio I see white tolerably breasted nuthatches every single winter but this year I've had at least one all summer. I hardly ever see a uniformly red breasted one.
