Bear impact on bird migrations? - 2005/06/05 20:50
I was seriously wondering if studies have been performed to see the impact of mirgatin birds in areas overpopulated by bears. Pehraps their's statistics that say how many acres of berries bears eat during the fall and winter motnhs while tyring to fatten up for winter, the same berries migratin birds would eat while flyin south toward winter yearly roosting areas.
I was curious becvause the bear populations of northern NJ are extremely dense, over 5 times higher than neasrby states. It's not an uncommon ocurence to see bears on the roadsside eatin berries (in fact, deeply tearing town entire bushes of berries), and I was wonderin if these same berries (usually viburnums like arrowwood and maple-leaf ) From the top of my head are being taken by bears at the epxense of migratin birds.
