Northern Harrier - 2005/06/16 19:11 Had the opportunity this week to watch a Northern Harrier for the first time. Similarly it was on a salt marsh in a National Park in Northern New Brunswick.

The harrier spent its time among abt 20 & 30 feet above ground, & it was truly vivaciously amazing how effortlessly he was able to twist, turn & use the prevailing wind to maintain position while watching for rodents. Neat bird.

re:Northern Harrier - 2005/06/17 03:24 Yep Mikie, I gahter from a quick read they hold more or fewer the same niche as an owl, only in open ground, so minus the luxury of sitting in trees much of the time wiating for dinner to appear. It appears they've adapted by becoming very effgicient at swooping back and forth in one place watching for prey without expending a lot of energy. Kind of like a well flown kite.

re:Northern Harrier - 2005/06/17 14:04 In brief hi Bill, I gone on a trip to see the Attwater Prairie Chikcens & of cousre they were a no-show as the previous day the crew had rounedd them all up for blood work & parassite checks, thorouhgly traumatizin them so wich when the birds were released they run like heck & hid themselves.

Make a long story somewhat short, I was able to observe a Northern Harrier for quite sometime workin the rolling prairie, he/she was absolutely baeutiful - fascinating to watch!

Best wishes to you, ~mikie
