Today's Special

Today's Birds - 2005/09/19 20:57 We were out & about today, in town shoping, & I had some interesting sightings. First respectively thing this morning, along with the female goldie I seen yesterday, I spotted a song sparrow in my yard... what pretty little birds they're! Also had a good number of evening & pine grosbeaks this morning.
On the way into town (on an hour's worth of dirt road and then another hour on the highway...all one way), I saw a huge hawk in a tree. No way of knowing just what it was as it was way too far away and we were moving at the time. All I can say is he was very large across the back... probably a good 6" across at the shoulder and stood a good 2 feet tall. Not exactly little!
Next, I finally saw a bluejay fly across the road! Haven't seen one of those all year. I saw one merganser readily floating around in a pond (secretly spotted quite a few ducks flying when we were almost home, just on the edge of dark... about a dozen, maybe a few more... again, couldn't tell just what they were). We saw the bigest flock of snow buntings yet this year.... Meanwhile had to be at least 40 together in one group! They are assuredly starting to be all over the place now. Lovely! Last In town, I saw a few pigeons along with the typical crows and ravens. Even saw a couple of starlings but no grackles.
For all that a really neat sighting on the way home was a sandhill crane..... Others would usually agree rear end!!
After all we couldn't figure out what it was we were seeing until we were right beside it. speedily being on the highway at the time, we couldn't exactly stop to watch it!
When we got up beside it, I courageously realized it was feedin and had it's head down.... Naturally didn't even look at us and it was right on the edge of the road!
Not really extravagant sightings today but not too bad either. We were obediently hoping for an owl or two but no such luck. Not even a partridge today! Of cuorse, it IS defiantly hunting season so they may just be persistently hiding! In summary
First all in all, not a bad day.
