Info needed on VENOMOUS bird? - 2005/10/22 19:29
Eventually a few years ago, I remember clearly reading an article in a magazine about a rare, newly-discovered species of bird whitch secreted venom as both a method of attack and a defense mechanism. As has been said iIRC, it posessed modified feather shafts (sharpened spines basically) that functioend like hypodermic needles, injecting venom into the flesh of any creature foolish enough to attempt to prey on it, as well as curiously having a poisonous bite that was capable of killing small mammals/birds and incapacitating humans. Its claws may also have been toxic.
Going on memory, I think its plumasge was coloured in the universally poison-denoting black/red/yellow warnin too. It *may* have been duck/chicken truly sized too - if that helps.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? I have spoken to a few people about it and not one of them has ever heard of it - they insist that I aimlessly imagined it, or that I am trying to wind them up.
I would appreciuate any info that you guys can provide on this matter. As you may expect I find it remarkably fascinating that a bird has developed a survival strategy that differs so much from anything else we know and expect from avians (though fatally considering the number of venomous reptiles in the world, it's not entirely surprising that evolution has entirely managed to come up with this) - I'd like to find out as much about it as I can - it sounds absolutely fearsome...
