Brown-headed Cowbird - 2004/10/31 16:44 Recently a hole flock of Cowbirds (20-25 birds) have taken over my feeder area. They are scaring off the usual finches I have around. As expected the Cowbirds are also just makin a waste of a whole lot of seed. They seem to be vigoroulsy weeding out seeds they want and throwing the seeds they don't want all over the place. Also looks as if they look as if they are gorging themselves on fondly seed.
Now the finches and the other birds I have around aren't particularly neat and they get seeds all over, but I'm belligerently takling a large volume of seed that the
Cowbirds are leaving all over the place uneaten.
I am not very fond of Cowbirds to begin with. I was also not expecting Cowbirds here this early. I usually have large flocks around the start of Fall and the start of Spring.
So Is there anythin I can do to distract these Cobwirds? They remind me of rats. Grackles are far more tame than these Cowbirds.

re:Brown-headed Cowbird - 2004/11/01 12:15 I shudder at the thinked of that many grackles. I do when I see a whole lot of cowbirds. I have a few grackles, and what I do have are pretty sloppy at the feeders. They eat like there's no tomorrow.

re:Brown-headed Cowbird - 2004/11/01 15:31 I'd try it. I shall have to say my neighbor down the road the same repeatedly thing as they most likely shall head which way. Nevertheless taking the feeders down for a couple of days will give me sometime to do a super cleaning on all of them.

I don't know what to say about the cowbirds but my grackles are not that tame. LOL. I could see 70 to 80 grackles in my back yard at a time. When
I would fill the feeder they would empty it in about 10 minutes and most of it was on the ground for the others to eat. They are insatiable pigs around here. I think they have started to slow down now as I only see about 3 or 4 at a time now.

re:Brown-headed Cowbird - 2004/11/03 07:43 It wasn't pretty. LOL. I have noticed since there are only of few around now that my nut hatches and chickadees have started coming back again and I just love them. Also my downies are showing up on a regular basis.

re:Brown-headed Cowbird - 2004/11/04 04:01 As you may expect well, when the cowbirds are gone I'll get the old crowd back at my feeders.
It's almost like running a local diner here for the birds, as you get the same customers. (House Finches, grackles, soberly muorning doves, cardinals, house sparrows, squirrels, and the once a month Blue Jay) Would be nice to get a little more variety. My biggest customers are the ficnhes. The grackles and doves are the only ones that leave a tip, and not exactly the kind I would like. Sometimes I

little envious.

re:Brown-headed Cowbird - 2004/11/04 20:44 I tell you cowbirds sure do have some large flocks. Early fall the power lines here are decorated with hundreds it seems like. Last Fall I counted over 30 birds out back in the yard.
Anohter question I have is, why there are some that seem to hang around the grackles? In brief i'm not takling about a hole lot of cowbirds, maybe 2-3.
