Black Crowned Night Heron...blue? - 2005/11/09 08:42 Are Black-Crowned Night Herons ever blue where the black normally is?
This evening I was at an island rookery off the SC coast with a friend and amongst a multitude of Brown Pelicans, Tri-colored Herons and others were two Black-Crowned Night Herons. One of them was unmistakably blue where the black normally is. It was a dark blue but not super dark and in no way would be called black. The other bird was jet black where it's black was. The only other difference was that the blue bird's feet/legs seemed yellow where the black bird's feet seemed more orange.
My friend is a budding naturalist and between us we have several bird books; Sibley's, Kaufman's, Stokes...but I find no reference to the blue coloring. The birds were not far apart and we watched them for a half hour or more so it's not likely that it was "just the way the light was on them" or something like that.
Is this unheard of or common? Can we claim a new species and name it ourselves? Blue-Capped Night Heron...catchy, huh?

Thanks for any info,

re:Black Crowned Night Heron...blue? - 2005/11/10 02:18 Well I've had time to look this up elsewhere and sure enough black crowneds are blue sometimes.

This site http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/nature/wild/birds/bcnheron.htm gives the following description:

The Black-crowned Night-Heron is a rather stocky heron. It looks as if it is hunched over with its head usually tucked down into its shoulders. Its plumage is gray and white with a distinctive black cap and a pair of white plumes that extend from the back of the head.
During the breeding season, the black feathers from the head and back emit a bluish-green gloss and the legs become red."

I wouldn't call this breeding season and I wouldn't call the color a bluish-green gloss and it was the heron with the jet black feathers that had the red legs but at least it seems to explain something.

This site http://www.cat1234.com/id148.htm

has a pic that shows a blue Black-crowned similar to the one we saw but this one seems somewhat less blue.

I've only gotten into birding this year but I've lived here 20 years and don't ever remember seeing that color on them.

Anyway, thanks for the replies...I learned something new!
