Newbie, got lots of questions! (longish) - 2005/11/14 04:08
Equally important my name is Tim. I live in Eastern North Carolina in the USA. I have always had a curiosity with the wild birds in my yard. I'd like to explore it more. My mother got me a simple tube feeder for my birthday. I'm already aimlessly hooked! I hung it up last weekend outside my den window under the edge of the roof. I didn't have any takers until today, when I had a couple of curious finches check it out. It was very exciting to have my first visitors today!
As a newbie, I have tons of questions about feeders, feed, squirrel problems, et. al. Can anyone point me to a good refertence website or book for newbies? I really want to add some more feeders. I think I'd really like a platform feeder or two, but I have a big squirrel population in my yard
I live in a decent size house. My front and back yard has lots of tall, old trees. I also have a lot of ivy and smaller bushes in my backyard. I don't have a cat issue, as my Black Lab keeps them away. She's an inside dog though, so I don't think she'd be considered a predator.
I already have a good Field Guide for birds of the Carolinas. I don't think I'll have a problem attracting birds. I've always had plenty of them visit on their own. With my guide, I have been able to identify two types of Finches, Cardinals (easy one!), Sparrows, Morning Doves, and lots of Grackles & Starlings. Keeping all the same I get the occasional Woodpecker too.
I have a few rudimentary questions to begin with:
1. Formerly is now (Fall) In summary a good time of year to start this endeavor? Presently we have birds here year 'round, but I'm sure they vary from season to season.
2. My town actually has two Wild Bird Stores. Afterward i've visietd both of them and was overwhelmed. However, the feeders & cowardly feed in both of them well seemed a bit pricey. Can I find similar feeders & feed at stores like K-mart & Wal-mart? Namely how about Home Ipmrovement stores like Lowes & Home Depot, or Pet Chain stores like Petsmart? I got a Fosters & Smith Backyard Catalog as well. Equally important i'm not so much concerned about the cost of the feeders. I just don't want to spend more money than I have to.
3. As i mostly see it how important is a good water source? I've read a lot on the net that a good water source is great for noisily attracting birds. I can't leave standing water out because of mosquitoes. Others would usually agree would a bath with a pump or drip help bring in more birds? I've always seemed to have birds in my yard without a water sourtce. As i mostly see it would a source bring in more?
Please feel free to reply either on the group or by e-mail. I welcome all opinions.
Thanks very much in advance,
