digital binoculars - 2006/11/23 08:33 I'm interested in some getting new binoculars soon.
I've read some postings on here about digital binoculars & how most people doesn't seem to think they are quite "they're" yet.

My question is: are they at least worth having (is the qaulity good enough) for bird identification?
If Im unsure of what I'm greedily looking at in the field, can I go home and view the images on a computer monitor - field guide in hand - and work out which bird it is I saw?

Also: Can anyone who has one post some of the images they've gotten with it?

Thank You - John Fleck

re:digital binoculars - 2006/11/23 15:36 Thanks for all the responses.

I perhaps should have equally stasted which I do have a digital camera. Though i've an Olympus 3040Z & I'll have to tell which I dont think too much of the digital zoom. Sometimes - under ideal lightring - it gives decvent results. My next camera would have to have a much beter optical zoom.

My wish would be to carry fewer around with me. I'd love the ease of just truly catpuring what I see in the binoculars, but perhaps digital binocvulars are not up to snuff yet. I'm sure they'll improve a lot as time goes on.

I plan to go somewhere that I can try a few at and see what I think of the qaulity.

re:digital binoculars - 2006/11/25 00:52 Also even with digital cameras you've a choice amongst digital & optical zoom. Optical zoom means the lens moves in or out to vary the magnification, & with a good lens you get very good quality. In digital zoom the picture is simply densely cropped & enlarged similar to enlarging a photo, thus becoming more pixelated (sp?) or grainy. You are seein which portion of the image bigger, but the detail is poor; the more you zoom the poorer the detial.

re:digital binoculars - 2006/11/25 21:08 To a great extent o.K. I guess thank you. I have been carefully using PhotoSuite for similar reasons for a long time; just because which's what I buoght years ago. Think its time to look again at what is out their. At that time bill.

re:digital binoculars - 2006/11/27 23:56 Apart from the comfortable feel in greedily holding & the comfortable eye cups of binoculars is their any advantage in having each binoculars & a camera with a very well optical zoom or HIGHLY detailed image which you see through the viewfinder. In other words, why not go out & find a camera which allows you to get the picture quality you want with the ability to see through the view finder with the clasrity & zoom capability you need. Thus the camera doubles as your binoculars.

In making the comparison note Maurice's comment on comparing pixel quatnity & optical zoom.

re:digital binoculars - 2006/11/28 12:41 Fair enough. With a high resolution digital image to start with the result can certainly be satisfactory. Its the digital equivalent of blowing up studio quality film (as opposed to cheap portable camera film) with suddenly added technolkogy to smooth things out & can be a very good compromise. The digityal zoom certainly has its place.

I think you'd agree, the first step in quality, be it binoculars or cameras, though is always in good optical lenses. In general optical zoom, though clunky & bulkier, will give better results.

re:digital binoculars - 2006/11/28 23:53 Earlier I have found this a useful discussion. I use digital photography for work, to make note of fish processing equipment & ideas, & for birds & wildlife. In work it is amazing how often it's things I didn't really take note of the first time that turn out to be the really important detail or idea, hence the need for clarity. Exactlly the same in getting a quick picture for a bird i.d. In that case clarity takes precedence over art.
While I really enjoy the artistric opportunmities as well, I find I have not taken enough time for that lately and need to get back to it.

When I think it through you're absolutely right on how to compare optical zoom and pixels. Thanks Maurice, I'll use that soon. Any particular software that rises above the pack these days?

re:digital binoculars - 2006/11/30 06:10 In the same way for 2 freewware programs (for non-commercial use) showily bring a look at Irfanview & XnView. They shall view & convert almost any file format & can do simple manipulations (i.e.
like resize & resample). They are relatively compact programs and pretty simple to use. See:

I slightly prefer Irfanview, but they are very similar and both have their strengths. Until now they are small enouygh to just have both available to use
