New budgies - 2006/12/19 14:44 Hi. I'm new on the block. I just got a pair of budgies and I'm a bit disappointed. I got them because a few years ago I had a Rosella and it was not a friendly bird at all. I wanted budgies because I thought they were easy and friendly. But these girls must be a bit traumatized. After three weeks, I can't tame them at all. I put my hand in the cage slowly several times a day and they're just terrified -- like I'm going to eat them or something. I want to just reach in and grab them! I don't want to get rid of them, but I didn't get them just to look at, I wanted a little company (I live in a very stressful place and can't have any other kind of pet).

Any advice?

re:New budgies - 2006/12/22 20:45 Hi judi,

Because you have two it will be much harder to tame them as they would naturally prefer each others company to yours. Are they both girls? Are they very young?

Still three weeks is absolutely nothing in taming time and the could take months, years or never come around at all. Birds are essentially wild creatures they take a huge amount of time to learn to trust, even hand reared babies that are used to handling may turn at a later stage.

Instead of keeping them inside the cage, buy a playstand (or even a cheap towel rail will do with little toys attached to it) and let them out for exercise. Offer them a special treat such as a piece of apple. You should give them fresh fruit/ veg often but to keep the treat special they would only get this when they come out. Millet is a huge fav for budgies too.
Eventually they will associate the treat with you and you with 'nice' things and the trust will begin.

I would stop putting your arm/hand in the cage and let them go at their own pace.

Clare

re:New budgies - 2006/12/23 23:18 Thank you so much for the advice. I have started letting them out of the cage more. But they're usually too scared to even come out. I just bought some new toys and ladders for them to get in an out easily. I just want to grab them and show them that I won't hurt them. But I think that will just make it worse. It's been 4 months now. I guess I just have to be patient.

Thanks.
Judi
