Hello - 2009/08/15 03:22
Decided to join after having a pair of Blue Mask Lovebirds for several yrs. We all live in Michigan. Never had any problems until yesterday. One of them died unexpectedly. We think it was the male but have never had either truly checked. We have had eggs laid once in the entire time we've had them. We are now very worried about the other. We've never really hand tamed them, now wondering if it's too late. Also wondering if we should get a new companion for the remaining one? Not sure though if he (calling it a him since his beak area and head were darker than the other) was sick or what. (I know we are probably going to get a lot of comments on our care of them, socialization, etc etc etc) Let me start with the last week: We cleaned the cage on Sunday and both were well, eating, drinking, bathing etc like normal. Yesterday we found him dead on the bottom of the cage. After close inspection, we discovered his lower beak had broken off and was laying on the bottom of the cage. Don't know when it happened or how. Our Aunt, who is an avid birder, came over and said that he was extremely thin but the other was fine. (She is better at handling them and knows A LOT more than us) We feed a standard small parrot/conure diet of seeds and some dried fruit. We have a water dish always full, available, and clean. We clean the cage weekly and never have had any problems. Have heard that a cuttlebone should be provided and when we tried one they never touched it. Any help, suggestions, advice and info will be GREATLY appreciated.
