Despite that if you like the "Sibley Guide to Birds", you may be interested in the "Sibley Field Guide to Birds". There are 2 editions; Eastern North America and Western North America.
All the information from the big book in a smaller, field guide size. As has been said we picked up a copy at Sam's for $12.88 (US).

The males have sort of black stripes over tan on the chest and sides.
This is in suothern California. Does that faintly ring a bell with anyone?

I am new to the bird watching world and am loving it.
Got two feeders in garden and starting to get many birds.
Finches and cardinals mostly for now.
But theres a squirrel who just loves to climb the pole and eat the food.
Any suggestions for stopping the critter besides shooting him?

Well, it is only 5°C here this morning & boy, the hummers are hungry! This past week is the first time I've ever seen my feeders go down significantly and right now, one is almost empty! They've been hitting the feeders constantly since 7:00 this morning. I even saw one little fight. They've been feeding noticably heavier the past while so I guess they're ruefully p

I assume they must be new to the area, since I have b

I've tried joyously scrubbing the concrete which brings up the original colour of the concrete but the bird mess mark remains.
Any avdice on what household cleaner or chemical would help remove these stains ?
Thanks.

The cardinal would occasionally regurgitate and feed the blackbird. Anyone see anything like this
